My Best of Blog Posts...

All the media outlets and shows do a "Best of 2008" tribute. I thought I would do it too. I have listed some blog posts that have important health messages. My two concerns this year have been health freedom and personal development.

We need health freedom so we can make the best choices without feeling pressured to follow the crowd. When we look at health news there are a lot of crowds who are promoting things that are not really good for us. We know drugs have side effects and the science behind them are questionable. We also know most diseases are problems of life style such as diet, sedentary habits, etc. It takes comitment of time and comitment of mind.

When your brain is connected to the body so appropriate homeostasis and healing can take place, you can develop your personal talents. Living your best life is promoted by the philosphy of chiropractc.

I thank all my practice members for their dedication, questions, and motivation to live well. Enjoy my list. And...see you at the table...the chiropractic table.

Remember,
You get to choose.

Even Oprah Gets Bad Dieting Advice...from the So-Called Best M.D.'s

In the newest O Magazine, Oprah talks about her latest weight issue and contemplates just accepting her weight as it is. Dr. Eades, the protein power man, has an excellent article in response to this topic. It is a long article but worth reading.
READ IT HERE

I like Dr. Eades because he doesn't give in to the misinformed low fat, low cholesterol "blubber" doctors still spout. He doesn't give in to the carbohydrate confusion created by the Food Guide Pyramids that are designed as marketing tools and not as true nutritional guide.

Here is a recent book by Dr. Eades.

My Letter to Health Care for America Now

I found an interesting grassroots website called Health Care for America Now

I have responded to their email campaign by explaining to them why I am unable to vote because I don't agree with either of the two choices offered. Take a look at the site and read what I sent to them in an email.

............................................
Dear Health Care for America Now:

I found your website but I cannot vote since I don't like either of the choices on your petition. I believe in some portions of your statement of common purpose, but there is too much emphasis on insurance.

#1 I want employers to get out of the health insurance business. People should buy the plan of their choice. Currently that is not available now because big companies have pushed out the individuals. Employers should stop offering health insurance.

#2 Health insurance should only be for hospital care and emergencies. If people paid out of pocket for doctors visits, including drugs, maintenance and prevention the prices would go down and people would be taking better care of themselves. I truly want the health insurance industry out of everyday non-emergency health care. It should be more like car insurance.

#3 People have turned dumb when it comes to their own health. If insurance doesn't cover something, mostly prevention, they turn their backs on it, even if it is the most simple and effective way to take care of themselves. Deductibles and co-pays are too confusing for people to sift through and contribute to the dumbing down of the health care consumer. The Explanation of Benefits consumers receive (EOB's) are not helpful. Get rid of all the complicated terminology and policies. Cover a health care service and pay the provider without all the hoops to jump through or don't cover it.

Create a better petition and then I will vote.

I am a chiropractor and I have seen when people don't write the check out themselves for their own health care, they stop exercising their responsibility to be informed about their mental and physical needs. They really put their brains on auto-pilot and stay unhealthy. I sound like I am insulting my practice members, however, they are an exceptional group. They do not believe health insurance is the answer to the chronic illnesses the U.S. is facing. They have been educated by their chiropractors and other wellness professionals. They know a grassroots campaign like yours is still asking for more government involvement and not empowering to the consumer. Please go back to the drawing board. Just like less government is the answer, less insurance is also the answer.

Thank you,

Dr. Homic

My letter to the Post Standard

My Letter

Here's the article that I found disturbing

More money = less health????

(I should really say...more insurance = less health)
A recent study of spending in schools has shown when schools have more money to spend on education parents take a less active role in their children's educational upbringing. For some reason parents take a back seat and don't really know what their children are up to in the classroom. My fear is not only do they ignore the teaching aspects of their child's school but they also ignore the peer-social aspects. But, the numbers are there. When money goes up, parental involvement goes down.

Does that happen with our health. If we have a good insurance policy (Who does anymore?)do we ignore our health? Does owning a health insuranc policy turn off our brains some how because we have a false sense of security?

Preventive health care is not covered under most insurance. You have to have a disease diagnosis or injury to be covered.

You don't need insurance to make smart health care decisions. In fact, more insurance coverage means more drugs. More drugs means more confusion about sickness because drugs are now causing most of the sickness.

It is an interesing study of social behaviors.

Being healthy is still not popular. You are very unique because you get adjusted regularly and keep up to date on natural health issues.

We have a wonderful innate intelligence that takes care of us, always healing. We must do all that we can to nurture our innate intelligence. This is the basis on mind-spine-intelligent design.

Thank you for being an enthusiastic chiropractic practice member. Your interest in having the best life despite the scare tactics of our major medical media outlets has been very inspiring for me.

Remember,
you get to choose.

See you at the table...the adjusting table.

"I got osteoporosis anyway." We're Doomed!

I get a lot of my ideas and material to write about from commercials. After all, they are so pravelent. Advertising works. It's been proven. But who is it working for? Sadly, there aren't enough commercials about chiropractic so blogs like this and chiripractic practice members who talk to others are the good old fashioned ways that really work at getting the message across. If you want true health freedom, do not rely on the mainstream media. Rely on your own personal research. And ask questions when you come in for your regular adjustments.

Today I heard Sally Field say once again, "I got osteoporosis anyway." What do most people, especially women, think? They think they are doomed. She took calcium, Vitamin D, and exercised but it didn't help her.

Bone breaks down faster than it builds up for a number of reasons, namely the body's systems are over stressed and it needs to rob calcium from bones to make up for the abuse.

What Sally Field doesn't tell us is what type of calcium and Vitamin D she took. It matters. Some supplements (the cheap ones) actually create free radicals! Only your chiropractor or natural health practitioner will tell you that.

I haven't read anywhere that Sally Field is an avid chiropractic user. We have no idea what longterm stress she has been under. We really don't know.

We do know that the rate of hip fractures has not changed since the 1960's according to a study cited in Alternative Medicine Magazine.

There has also been quiet talk of osteoporosis drugs causing bone fractures do to an unbalanced build up of bone. Do we really know if this artificially built up bone is quality bone tissue?

If you want to understand hormone balance read John R. Lee's books

PTSD & Chiropractic

The Pentagon is looking at new ways to treat troops suffering from combat stress. USA Today reported that an army study showed that 1 in 4 combat soldiers with post traumatic stress disorder are using herbs, chiropractic, acupuncture, and vitamin therapy to help themselves. The pentagon spent $5 million this year to study these therapies.

It is good to know people are discovering chiropractic is not a mechanical aspirin for pain but it is a modulator of brain chemicals that influence emotions and behavior.

In researching for this blog article I found this article on a case study of one woman involved in domestic violence and how she resolved her situation.
READ THE STUDY HERE. It goes on to discuss the positive social and financial impact chiropractic can have.

This is the direction I want chiropractic to take. With enough enlightened people the information will get out much faster. Have you told someone about the chiropractic lifestyle? I thank you for doing so.

McDonald's Promotes Nutrition?????

Wow! I couldn't believe it. Did you get the tiny 3 page flyer from McDonald's touting it's fine foods in this week's Sunday newspaper?

Now I love a good salty, microwaved, chemicalized cheeseburger every once in a while, but, honestly, do people believe the advertisements?

There are three sections to this flyer. The first section highlights the meat they serve. I give the grilled chicken good marks, but I wonder how many chemicals it was treated with to make it juicy and long lasting. (If someone knows for sure, let me know.) There is very little at McDonald's that is not deep fried, fried, or microwaved which take away any healthy properties of meat. The best protein source is an egg and you can order scrambled eggs at McDonald's.

McDonald's also brags about the dairy. They can't do any more harm to a carton of milk. It is already pasteurized (Click Here if you don't already know about the problems with pasteurized milk More here, too). Read any ingredient label to find out what is in sliced American cheese. Yogurt can be considered a health food if it didn't have such a high sugar content. And since when is ice-milk good for you? It is a dessert after all.

And don't forget McDonald's wonderful inclusion of fruits and vegetables. The salads are tasty, but be warned. If you are trying to reduce your soy intake read the label on the dressing. Deep fried french fries do not resemble a potato. Just look at the calorie content of a small order of french fries: 210 and large: 540. Can you eat only a few fries and stop? I can't. I admit it. Frying in vegetable oil is not a natural process. Read about it here. There are tomatoes on some hamburgers but it cannot be considered a significant portion to meet your "strive for five" quota. The fruit in the pies and yogurt are once again loaded down in sugar.

I am glad to see the ad didn't try to convince us of the nutritional value of buns or English muffins.

If you are looking for healthy choices, the information is out there. Be aware of the calories and sugar content before you take a bite. And also remember this: the last time you ate at a fast food restaurant, how did you feel? And how long did it take to feel back to normal again?

If you want fast food, realize it is not all that fast. With all the driving and waiting in line you could make something better at home. If you really want to take it easy on your pocket, stop at the grocery store and buy an apple to satiate your appetite until you get home. Food at home can be fast. How long does it really take to build yourself a great salad?

Nothing takes the place of authentic food.

For authentic health, live cleanly. Keep your digestive tract clean and as always, keep your spine clean---meaning keep it clear of mechanical dysfunction that slow down the nervous system.

You get to choose.

What Can We Learn From Kids?

There was a fish bowl in the Children's Room at Seymour Library. Children were asked to write down their goals for the school year. Sheila Mikkelson, the library director listed the children's goals in her "Message from the Director" page on the library's website.

I copied and pasted the goals they wrote down. Take a look at them and pay attention to how you feel. I was touched reading them. I could imagine all the kids wanting to be better at something in their lives. They were written anonymously but I have an empathic feeling inside me rooting for all these children.

As adults we try to downplay our wishes with a stoic, outward stance. Let's not forget the feelings of inspiration and motivation from our younger days.

Do you have a passion? Are you going after your desires? Be healthy and energetic so you can. This is the vitalistic philosophy of chiropractic's subluxation free life-style. To learn more, let me know or leave a comment. This is what my Be More Alive blog is dedicated to.

Read the children's goals:

1. My goal is to pass 8th grade

2. To learn to read harder books

3. 4.0 GPA

4. Do good in school

5. Be a great friend

6. To find the best college and pass 12th grade

7. To get my GED

8. Play baseball

9. Meet the Jonas Brothers

10. Be a positive influence wherever I go

11. Be good

12. Have a good day at swimming

13. I would like to start dance/ to read the books

14. My goal for the whole school year is to get good grades

15. Do good in school and in math

16. To get better grades

17. My goal is to pass

18. To write my first and last name well

19. To be good

20. For dessert in my lunch every time

21. Getting 100 on tests

22. I wish for a batman set

23. To have a positive year with no fights or enemies/to get along with everyone

24. I want to learn math

25. My goal is to be a good student

26. I can’t wait until tomorrow

27. I wish to have lots of friends and do better in science and spelling

28. Get smarter in school

29. I wish to do great in school for the rest of the year

High Cholesterol Isn't A Disease---It's Just a Lab Value

The cholesterol theory is just that -- a theory. Who has proven it? And, statin drugs make no difference in someone's chances of dying. But these drugs certainly are a big deal in taking away quality of life.

Dr. Michael R. Eades writes a great blog article about the cholesterol trap and medical care protocols. Click the link below to get his view on screening tests that can steer you in the wrong direction.

Why am I so focused on the "cholesterol junk" forced upon us? This is one the most annoying examples of what many in the natural health business call Health Scare (It is far from health care). Fear is used to manipulate people into doing unhealthy things like take "maintenance drugs" that maintain apathy---not health.

As a society, we hate ourselves. We truly hate ourselves and I see it in how we treat our bodies. We don't believe we are strong. We don't believe we were given great intelligent bodies. We quit trusting our instincts.

Not here at Homic Advanced Chiropractic!
As a chiropractor teaching about advanced thinking for advanced living, we have no reason whatsoever to feel so badly about being alive.

The glass is not half full! The glass is a receptacle with a lot of potential for being full and half full and empty. It all depends on how we want to take care of the glass.

The Vaccine Debate....Why is it still a debate?

Are you still wondering why there is still such an argument for and against vaccination? It's a tough one when it is so hard to get your hands on information.

Think about these common myths...

The 25 Most Common Arguments Supporting Vaccination:
CAUTION:THESE ARE MYTHS

Vaccines are safe.
Vaccines are effective and have saved millions of lives around the world.
Serious adverse events following vaccination are rare.
Vaccination has been demonstrated to be one of the most effective medical interventions known to mankind. The eradication of smallpox demonstrates this accomplishment.
Vaccine-induced antibodies provide protection against infection, disability and death caused by vaccine-preventable diseases. Antibodies are a sign of protection.
Arguments against vaccination are irrational, based on fear and resistance to authority. (In other words, persons who make these arguments don't want the government telling them what to do). Many are conspiracy theorists and believe the government is knowingly harming them.
Vaccine-preventable diseases of childhood can be serious. Your child can contract one of these illnesses and your child could die.
Parents who believe chickenpox is a benign disease and that the vaccine is not necessary are putting their children at considerable risk. (Includes extensive facts about the chickenpox vaccine.)
No child should be denied the benefits of vaccination.
Vaccination is one of the most cost-effective interventions in all of health care.
There is no evidence that vaccination harms the immune system.
There is no evidence that vaccination can lead to chronic disease.
There is no evidence that vaccination is linked with the development of asthma.
There is no evidence that vaccination can lead to allergies.
The traces of additives found in vaccines are inconsequential and non-toxic.
The stray viruses sometimes found in vaccines are harmless.
Vaccines cannot cause the diseases they are designed to prevent.
We must continue to vaccinate against polio until the WHO declares the virus is eradicated. After all, polio is just a plane ride away.
Everyone must be vaccinated to protect everyone else.
Pertussis (whooping cough) is a serious illness and children are at risk of dying from this infection.
The pertussis vaccine is safe. After all, it has been FDA-approved for use since the 1940s.
Due to some concerns about the whole-cell pertussis vaccine, a new, acellular pertussis vaccine was licensed in 1991. The DTaP vaccine is safe and effective.
There are no effective treatments for pertussis.
The incidence of pertussis is on the rise. Adolescents need to be revaccinated to prevent outbreaks of pertussis.
There is no relationship between the MMR vaccine and autism. The MMR vaccine is completely safe and should be given to all children. Claims made by Dr. Andrew Wakefield about MMR and autism have been disproved.

Don't Let the News Stories Make You Sick

Good morning, wellness enthusiasts!

Let me tell you about my morning. I grabbed my newspapers and headed back to bed to do some morning reading.

The front page story: Law allows phamacists to administer flu shots. Wow!

Here's my editorial. I am coming from a subluxation view point, of course.

First let's talk about the physical subluxations that a flu shot causes to the spine.

Here is a list of the true chemical soup of a flu shot:

Ethylene glycol (antifreeze)

Phenol, also known as carbolic acid (this is used as a disinfectant, dye)

Formaldehyde, a known cancer-causing agent

Aluminum, which is associated with Alzheimer's disease and seizures and also cancer producing in laboratory mice (it is used as an additive to promote antibody response)

Thimerosal (a mercury disinfectant/preservative) can result in brain injury and autoimmune disease

Neomycin and Streptomycin (used as antibiotics) have caused allergic reaction in some people.

Vaccines are also grown and strained through animal or human tissue like monkey kidney tissue, chicken embryo, embryonic guinea pig cells, calf serum, and human diploid cells (the dissected organs of aborted human fetuses as in the case of rubella, hepatitis A, and chickenpox vaccines).
Click here for a supporting article.

Dangerous chemicals cause subluxations and both, chemicals and advanced subluxations, damage the nervous system. As the immune system tries to detoxify these chemicals the body becomes weak to the usual strains of viruses and bacteria we are constantly exposed to.

What does a well published doctor think about the flu shot? Hugh Fudenberg, MD, an immunogeneticist and biologist with nearly 850 papers published in peer review journals, has reported that if an individual had five consecutive flu shots between 1970 and 1980 (the years studied), his/her chances of getting Alzheimer's Disease is ten times higher than if they had zero, one, or two shots. READ MORE

Now let's talk about the mental subluxations this news story is causing.

There is always talk of a shortage of flu vaccine, and people actually become panicked. Are we really that short of physicians, nurse practicioners, and physician's assistants that we need more warm bodies who are willing to jab needles in people's arms? While allowing pharmacists to help out sounds like great news it is planting another subtle seed of fear that we are helpless to these bugs. But the truth is, these viruses and bacteria are around all us all year long. What's so special about fall and winter? Perhaps it is in the way we take care of ourselves.

I was a mental health counselor before I became a chiropractor but I studied both for the same reason: the biggest epidemic we can succumb to is our lack of confidence in our own personal strengths. This is a serious problem when we start giving in to health advice that is not necessary and downright dangerous.

If you read more of the newspaper article there is also a new law that hotels need to demonstrate that their glasses have been sanitized. I didn't know this was an ordeal. Maybe it is for the germ-a-phobics. Landlords also have to provide information on the indoor air quality of their dwellings. Who ends up paying for that? The state of New York just created a new business niche, so perhaps it will also create more jobs.

What great topics for debate.

But always remember, no one needs to take the flu shot. It is an individual choice.
No one has to drink out of a hotel glass. Pass it up and bring along a thermos (no germs if you brought it from home...). If you're a renter, it might be tough to figure out the air quality. All homes, rented or owned have carpeting, furnishings, paint, second hand smoke, and furnaces exposing us to who knows what.

But we still get to choose.

This is just the news. We can decide for ourselves.

I will always tell you, keep the energy of confidence flowing in your spine and mind.

Be More Alive Step 1: Live, Love, Heal

This is a photo of Louise Hay and Joe Vitale. More on them in just a moment...

Becoming a chiropractor for me had nothing to do with back pain.

I worked for the South Carolina Department of Mental Health and saw how people let mental pain wreck their bodies physically. For some odd reason, they were unable to take care of their bodies which caused them more emotional anguish. When they talked about physical pain, their psychiatrist told them to go to their regular physicians who really didn't know how to help them. I saw chiropractic as the untapped resource needed to really kill two birds with one stone. The mind and body are uniquely linked and chiropractic doesn't ignore one over the other.

How you live, love, and heal is affected by the innate functioning of the nervous system. Learning how to tap into this personal power so the mind and body thrive together is the most important step to vibrant living.

I require an understanding of this when anyone starts chiropractic care. It's also important to reaffirm your dedication to your life by evaluating your basic attitudes especially how you perceive what you are getting out of living, loving, and healing.

It has to do with making good use of the energy of confidence.
It starts in your spine and spreads to your mind.

If you are familiar with Louise Hay, check out this article of her visit with Joe Vitale. It's a great story. They talk about anger and resentment being a contributor to disease. Louise Hay had cancer and realized she needed to understand her parents rather than resent them.

Labor Day: A Time to Honor Your Vocational Passions

Dear Practice Members:

As I near the 13th anniversary of my decision to become a chiropractor (Labor Day weekend, ironically), I have been reflecting on the many people who have enriched my path such as my teachers and practice members.

I’ve listened to people tell me what they think is chiropractic. I’ve talked to people about the potential of a chiropractic adjustment, but it can’t be conveyed in words. It has to be experienced.

I’ve talked to people who wouldn’t give chiropractic a 2nd thought and still I adjust people who have been with my practice since the early days of my portable table in my truck.

Regardless of where you are on your wellness journey, I ask you to reflect on an awesome thought:

Imagine what the world will be like when every man, woman, and child is getting adjusted…without limits or hesitation because of age, occupation, insurance rules, unfounded fears or prejudice.

It is all because the adjustment lets the real you shine through.

I invite you to let your physical-ness and passions awaken and flourish.

Everyone.

M.D. Aging Expert Says Subluxations of Childhood Cause Aging Diseases

Osteoporosis is a childhood disease according the Dr. Robert Butler.
He also adds that a Toxic Food Environment is also dangerous as he talks about processed and fast foods. He doesn't know it, but he is talking about subluxations.

B.J. Palmer, D.C. Ph.C., the developer of chiropractic, said Subluxations are symptoms of interference to innate intelligence. We all know toxins, trauma, and unbalanced emotions cause subluxations. Subluxations take hold when we are very young and reprogram the body in such as way that rebounding from stress becomes difficult impairing the healing process. Be aware how profound knowledge of chiropractic vitalism has on your health, quality of life, and outlook.

Remember, you can learn more about advanced chiropractic through the Chiropractive Curriculum.

As a phsyician, Dr. Butler feels 12 minutes a visit is not enough time to work with a patient and the health care delivery system is a huge problem in promoting quality of life. There must be a change. I agree with him and implore everyone to always take an interest in self education on all kinds of health matters.

Watch this short video for a sneak peek at Dr. Butler's talk.

Dr. Robert Butler is a psychiatrist and gerontologist who recognized in the 1960's that the elderly were discriminated against and has been dedicated to social health policy and education as aging impacts all of society.

It matters to all of us.

Chiropractic Works Because Something is Right, Not Wrong

I am valuable and everything I do reflects on how much I value myself.

Be excited. The human body partners up with its innate intelligence to allow you to be the best person you can be.

The best part is chiropractic enhances what is already great. Too many people today are down on themselves for various reasons which aggravates their health.

Do you look at life as getting better or getting worse?

I make it a point to teach people how to get reacquainted with their bodies. We know folks who have never been adjusted and they have so many imbalances in their lives. It is very evident in the way they hold themselves up, treat themselves, and make decisions.

This is the aspect of wellness that is not as popular. Wellness is not nutrition, and exercise, and yoga. Wellness is mind-set that says, "I am valuable and everything I do reflects on how much I value myself."

People who do not get adjusted regularly, but finally decide to try it have an important job of working around the permanent damage that may have taken hold due to long term subluxations. It can be a long process. I've seen people get adjusted for over one or two years before they finally felt "comfortable" in their bodies. It is worth working for because being comfortable means you have more confidence. I want everyone to be confident in their innate intelligence which fuels their personal power.

You get to choose.

Your Body Speaks When Your Mind is in Denial

I have said this often, especially in the Be More Alive Handbook:
Your body speaks when your mind is in denial.

Are you trying to free the body? You need to free the mind first.
Also, if you are trying the free the mind, you should work on freeing the body, too.
After many centuries of the mind and body being considered separately, we can finally feel whole. History has an important lesson to teach us on mind-body dualism.

People can have very persistent physical problems because they do not acknowledge a feeling or belief that has been slowing smoldering. We are not split personalities. We can think we are organized or in control of our thoughts but they spill over into our bodies.

It is all about imbalance. When we are over-focused on something we naturally ignore something else. Getting back into balance is the key.

Please read this amzing personal story how one thought cleared up someone's decade of chronic pain and fibromyalgia. I'm sure it will reach others in a very profound way.

Serotonin Syndrome: How Can You Get Too Much?

Here is an article about Serotonin Syndrome. Is this a case of too much of a good thing? It can easily be misdiagnosed as fibromyalgia or a similar type of chronic fatigue. Some symtoms of serotonin syndrome include mental status changes, behavioral changes, hyperactive nerves and muscles, pain and dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system.

Starbucks and Health: What Have We Learned Here?

A recent news story stated Starbucks is closing 600 stores and laying off 12,000 employees. [ARTICLE SOURCE]

It sounds like people can't afford coffee and are opting to brew at home. You might think I am going to talk about the dangers of caffeine and all that sugar people dump into their favorite flavored coffees. That's not where I want to go here in today's blog post. We know coffee drinking is a "fun treat" and we have to pace ourselves.

I want to revisit a story about Starbucks from three years ago.

Starbucks spends more on health insurance than they do on raw materials. From a business point of view,it sounds like a risky option. Paying for employee perks is an important expense especially because investing in good workers prolongs their ability to stay and prevents worker turn over. Health coverage is not mandated by the government. Whether it is in the future, that is up for debate. I think the cost of health care has finally hit Starbucks and it was bound to happen.

Much of the public looks at health insurance as a nice little buffer to rely on when you need to run to the doctor for every little sniffle or mishap. People expect vision, dental and a host of other minimal health needs such as chiropractic to be included when insurance really should be reserved for emergencies and major surgeries.

We are draining our own money by assuming every health care intervention should cost us a $6 copay (Really it's coming out of our wallet, anyway, in hidden costs).

Now here is the real problem...

We are a nation of chronic "sickies" due to poor health habits that lead to hypertension, weight gain, high blood sugar, painful joints, muscle atrophy, etc.

Health care is so overburdened with illness that there is no time for wellness. We're going to have to get wellness on our own.

I urge everyone to use natural health care approaches especially chiropractic for it's nervous system protection that ultimately is your body's life support. Natural health practitioners teach wellness.

Take a lesson from Starbucks. Don't assume financing health care is the answer. Education is the answer.

It's About Freedom and Confidence

Okay, time time to shift gears. They last few posts have been downright scary but they need to be out there. I am not trying to get anyone upset or throw you in a deep depression because there are a lot of unhealthy practices being promoted in our world.

We know the simple ones: smoking, too much soda and candy and missing out on too much exercise. Somehow if you speak of this out loud people are offended especially if the food industry is criticized in any way. They provide a great service making food prep and cooking so easy (at a cost of a different kind).

The information is out there. You can read blogs, books, and talk to your natural health care practitioners. They'll tell you why everyday things that have slipped into our lives probably need a second look.

My purpose is not to make you afraid, or depressed. Some people might say, "Well, what's the point of trying? Everything out there is going to kill us anyway!"

But, we shouldn't resort to that. It's easy to give in and give up. It's easier to live happily in ignorance. But we can't switch that thought and highlight our freedom to choose. We can make a decision and have confidence. If we follow the vitalistic philosophy of chiropractic that we are self healing when nurtured, we have confidence and we don't let all the negativity get to us.

It means saying no to things that are not natural. It means ignoring the idea that we are weak and not intelligent enough to make decisions for ourselves.

Nurture your body and mind.

You get to choose.

Low Carb is Proven Again

Click here for the news flash about low carb diets

It made the news again, eating low carbs is better for your body. The debate comes in when people resort to eating the most unhealthy meats and forgetting about fruits and vegetables.

It is low carb, not no carb.

How many natural health care practitioners are pulling their hair out because of horrendous misinterpretations? Ask them and they'll tell you.

If you follow the Numbers Don't Lie Diet you'll get a sensible look at carbohydates.

The problem with the word "carbs" is it includes all carbohydrates, the healthy and not so healthy. It really should be called the low-grain diet. In fact, Dr. Mercola's The No Grain Diet is a very good reference that I recommend. There is a difference between vegetables, fuits, and grains and in what form you should eat them. What you do to your food makes a big difference, too.

I am happy to discuss this anytime.

Bovine Growth Hormone....

Drugs in your milk.

Do you know how many countries have banned Bovine Growth Hormone? The U.S. still allows it.

The FDA doesn't require labeling.
Monsanto (BGH maker) has sued an organic milk company that labeled their milk as "BGH free."

Animal drugs don't go through the same inspections and testing as people drugs.

Monsanto employees drink organic milk!!!

Drugs and Informed Consent: Subluxated TV Commercials

Recent news reports have been criticizing the accuracy of information on the television commercials for Vytorin.

When you read this article linked above you will read a short sentence about the public having the ability to make informed decisions.

Only 20% of people polled about the commercials have any recollection of the side effects presented.

These fancy commercials have great visuals, a man rowing down a pristine river, funny comparisions of your Aunt Jenny resembling a cherry cheesecake, etc. It makes poor health less scary and in fact, more acceptable.

Doesn't it look like it is acceptable to be sick? To me it is not acceptable to be sick. I may sound cold hearted and uncaring but being sick takes you away from your family, your work, and your ability to make a living.

The bigger problem is the side effects of drugs are presented in an irresponsible way. Drugs are toxins given out in small amounts. This is the "generic" definition. Side effects are misleadingly touted as mere annoyances. Head aches, constipation, fainting, nausea, and weight fgain are not annoyances. In reality they are signs the nervous system is in distress.

The body is already in distress when someone decides a prescription is needed and then we stress it more.

For better informed consent we need to look at both sides of the health care coin, so to speak.

Natural Health Care vs. Allopathic Health Care

I am a chiropractor and I tout natural health care. I admit I am one sided and I don't apologize for it. I offer natural health care based on the logic of the human body reacting appropriately to stress. Natural health care emphasizes getting rid of the stress rather than adding more stress. Our bodies were designed to self heal and it will every time as long as the stressor doesn't compeltely overcome the nervous system.

That's what I teach. I offer the brain/body rebooting a chiropractic adjustment provides. The rest is up to you. I help with that too by giving you the natural side of health to balance the overabundance of the allopathic attitude.

You get to choose.

When Adjustments Don't Work: How Drugs Cause Subluxation

DRUG WATCH

Remember the 3 causes of subluxations?
(1) Physical trauma
(2) Emotional stress
(3) Chemical stress

Drugs are a big source of chemical stress on the nervous system. They interfere with nutrient absorption. They work differently in conjunction with different chemicals such as caffeine and alcohol. They also interact differently with other drugs.

I didn't know a certain thyroid hormone raises blood sugar and can complicate diabetes.

Lipitor increases Vitamin A levels in the blood and monitoring to prevent Vitamin A toxicity is recommended.

Prednisone reduces calcium absorption and depletes vitamin C , selenium, magnesium, potassium, vitamin B6 and zinc (all important nutrients for soft tissue and nerve healing).

Prilosec interferes with absorption of beta carotene, iron and vitamin B12.

I found this informative website below that lists side effects, nutrient depletion, herbal interactions and health notes. I recommend bookmarking its main pain to be used as a reference whenever you have a concern about a drug.

John Assaraf Doesn't Want You to Miss Out on Something Great

I have John Assaraf's book, Having It All. I bought it in paperback at Walden's in the Finger Lakes Mall about three weeks ago.

On page 46 John Assaraf writes, "At any given time, your conscious mind is absorbing about 11 million pieces of information, but you're only aware of about 40 to 2000 pieces. What happens to the other 10,998,000 pieces?"
Really, what does happen? Some kind of mechanism has to take action preventing us from having a mental breakdown or even worse, a spontaneuous brain injury!

He goes on to write, "You're dropping them from your consciousness because you either don't need them or you' ve conditioned your brain to drop them."

This makes sense. Think of all the things we ignore because we don't need them. We do not need spam in our email so we have a way to delete them. We also condition ourselves to ignore things like commercials for sports games if you do not a sports fan. Many of us are conditioned to ignore the sublte hints we are given that our health needs more prevention attention.

Just this morning I walked by a pile of dishes on the counter. I almost stopped to do them. If I had done that I would not have written this blog entry. I had an idea brewing in my mind. I know for a fact after forgetting many ideas in the past that it doesn't work, so the dishes are still there on the counter.

Many people think they don't need chiropractic so they ignore the articles I write or ignore a suggestion from a friend to go visit a chiropractor.

Also, in our society we are not conditioned to take a look at what natural health can provide us. I still hear Dr. Dean Edell say vitamins are junk! He's right because a lot of them on the market are junk, especially when you can buy a three month supply for $12! However, he is missing out on something. His brain is conditioned to miss it.

Did you know for the longest time I thought Dean Edell was Deena Dell and I couldn't understand why he had a girl's name? He just talks too fast. Boy, the brain gets into a rut! That's one reason why I named my business Homic Advanced Chiropractic instead of Homic Chiropractic. The other reason is because chiropractic truly advances your life.

Most of the population still do not have to a routine of getting weekly chiropractic care.

Because our brains are so busy, too many people ignore the truth about the devistation of accumulated subluxations in their spines. I am talking about premature death and needless suffering. I don't promise cures because nothing has been cured and no one dies of disease but the role subluxations play in quality of life is still highly ignored by the segment of the population that does not stick to a routine of weekly chiropractic care.

I've added a page on my website to reveal a confession about my determination to make sure people understand why I don't want them to miss out on a great opportunity to learn about chiropractic's key to vitality.

Corn Syrup Part 2: Are You Sure It's Bad?

In my reading on high fructose corn syrup, I found more information on this processed magical food for the "non-food" industry from Mercola.com....................................................

Fructose is No Answer For a Sweetener

By Nancy Appleton, Ph.D.

The consumption of fructose (corn syrup) has risen considerably in the general population within recent years. In 1980 the average person ate 39 pounds of fructose and 84 pounds of sucrose. In 1994 the average person ate 66 pounds of sucrose and 83 pounds of fructose. This 149 pounds is approximately 19% of the average person's diet.

This increase is due to several factors. There was a decreased use of cane and beet sugar (sucrose) in processed foods and a wide spread use of corn syrup due to economics. Corn is much cheaper and twice as sweet as table sugar. It is absorbed only 40% as quickly as glucose and causes only a modest rise in blood sugar.

A few years ago the medical community revealed that there was good news for diabetics. Many people had previously known that table sugar (sucrose) was not a healthy food for diabetics because it raised their blood sugar levels above normal.

Since diabetics have a hard time maintaining healthy blood sugar levels, doctors counseled diabetics not to eat sugar. The new revelation was that diabetics could eat fructose because fructose did not raise their blood sugar level extremely high. So far so good, but there is more.

Many doctors were recommending fructose instead of glucose. Today fructose is not only being used by some diabetics but it is used for a variety of foods, drinks and confectionery around the world. It is used for candies for diabetics, desserts for weight watchers, drinks for the sportsman and jelly for the health conscious.

The medical community recommended it because of a low increase in glucose in the blood. The scientists did not look at other factors in the body when a person eats sugar. Let's look at some of these factors now.

Fructose has no enzymes, vitamins, and minerals and robs the body of its micronutrient treasures in order to assimilate itself for physiological use.

Fructose browns food more readily (Maillard reaction) than with glucose. This may seem like a good idea, but it is not.

The Maillard reaction, a browning reaction, happens with any sugar. With fructose it happens seven times faster with than glucose, results in a decrease in protein quality and a toxicity of protein in the body.

This is due to the loss of amino acid residues and decreased protein digestibility. Maillard products can inhibit the uptake and metabolism of free amino acids and other nutrients such as zinc and some advanced Maillard products have mutagenic and/or carcinogenic properties. The Maillard reactions between proteins and fructose, glucose, and other sugars may play a role in aging and in some clinical complications of diabetes.

Research showed that in subjects that had healthy glucose tolerance and those that had unhealthy glucose tolerance, fructose caused a general increase in both the total serum cholesterol and in the low density lipoproteins (LDL) in most of the subjects. This puts a person at risk for heart disease.
Another study showed that the very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) increased without an apparent change in high density lipoproteins (HDL). The VLDL and the LDL should be as low as possible and the HDL should be as high as possible.
There is a significant increase in the concentration of uric acid that is dependent on the amount of fructose digested. After glucose no significant change occurs. An increase in uric acid can be an indicator of heart disease.
Fructose ingestion in humans results in increases in blood lactic acid, especially in patients with preexisting acidotic conditions such as diabetes, postoperative stress, or uremia. The significance to human health is that extreme elevations cause metabolic acidosis and can result in death.
Fructose is absorbed primarily in the jejunum and metabolized in the liver. Fructose is converted to fatty acids by the liver at a greater rate than is glucose. When consumed in excess of dietary glucose, the liver cannot convert all of the excess of fructose in the system and it may be malabsorbed. What escapes conversion and being absorbed into the cells may be thrown out in the urine. Diarrhea can be a consequence.
Fructose interacts with oral contraceptives and elevates insulin levels in women on "the pill."
Fructose reduced the affinity of insulin for its receptor. This is the first step for glucose to enter a cell and be metabolized. As a result, the body needs to pump out more insulin, to handle the same amount of glucose.
Fructose consistently produced higher kidney calcium concentrations than did glucose in a study with rats. Fructose generally induced greater urinary concentrations of phosphorus and magnesium and lowered urinary pH compared with glucose.
The balance of minerals in the body is very important for the function of vitamins, enzymes and other body function. When the minerals are out of the right relationship, the body chemistry suffers. The presence of diarrhea might be the cause of decreased absorption of minerals.

Fructose-fed subjects lose minerals. They had higher fecal excretions of iron and magnesium than did subjects fed sucrose. Apparent iron, magnesium, calcium, and zinc balances tended to be more negative during the fructose feeding period as compared to balances during the sucrose feeding period.
A study of 25 patients with functional bowel disease showed that pronounced gastrointestinal distress may be provoked by malabsorption of small amounts of fructose.
Many times fructose and sorbitol are substituted for glucose in parenteral nutrition (intervenious feeding, IV). This can have severe consequences with people with hereditary fructose intolerance, a congenital disorder affecting one in 21,000. A European doctor declared: "Fructose and sorbitol containing infusion fluids have no further place in our hospital pharmacies."
There is significant evidence that high sucrose diets may alter intracellular metabolism, which in turn facilitates accelerated aging through oxidative damage. Scientists found that the rats given fructose had more undesirable cross?linking changes in the collagen of their skin than in the other groups.
These changes are also thought to be markers for aging. The scientists say that it is the fructose molecule in the sucrose, not the glucose, which plays the larger problem.

Fructose is not metabolized the same as other sugars. Instead of being converted to glucose which the body uses, it is removed by the liver.
Because it is metabolized by the liver, fructose does not cause the pancreas to release insulin the way it normally does. Fructose converts to fat more than any other sugar. This may be one of the reasons Americans continue to get fatter.
Fructose raises serum triglycerides significantly. As a left-handed sugar, fructose digestion is very low. For complete internal conversion of fructose into glucose and acetates, it must rob ATP energy stores from the liver.

Fructose inhibits copper metabolism. A deficiency in copper leads to bone fragility, anemia, defects of the connective tissue, arteries, and bone, infertility, heart arrhythmias, high cholesterol levels, heart attacks, and an inability to control blood sugar levels.
It seems that the magnitude of the deleterious effects varies depending on such factors as age, sex, baseline glucose, insulin, and triglyceride concentrations, the presence of insulin resistance, and the amount of dietary fructose consumed.

Some people are more sensitive to fructose. They include hypertensive, hyperinsulinemic, hypertriglyceridemic, non?insulin dependent diabetic people, people with functional bowel disease and postmenopausal women.

There is a continuing increase in sugar consumption in the United States. We now eat 153 pounds of sugar per person per year.

This increase is mostly in the form of fructose. From the research presented, it seems that this increase is going to have a negative influence on our health.

The AMA Can't Decide if High Fructose Corn Syrup is Bad For You!! ( I hope you can decide for yourself)

I have the news article posted below. Yes, it's true. The AMA (American Medical Association) won't take a stand. They want scientific proof HFC syrup causes obesity. What?? Why do we need scientific proof for everything? What is their definition of scientific proof anyway? All you need is a basic biology book that tells you what happens to the body when sweeteners are over consumed. And if you don't know how HFC syrup is made check out this website. It is made with a fungus, yes that's right.

Actually the info on this website is plenty of research for me. HFC syrup doesn't make you feel full. It makes you eat more!!!

Well, HFC syrup is great for increasing the shelf life of junk foods (really, let's call it non-foods) but won't increase our own shelf life!!!

But the AMA can't make up its mind. I guess its better to avoid answering the question because the Corn Refiners Association might get mad! I've included their press release on how happy they are that the AMA sided with them.

Hey, we've all got brains. We can decide for ourselves.

By the way, only about 40% of medical doctors are members of the AMA.

Reprieve For High Fructose Corn Syrup

(WebMD) High fructose corn syrup, a sweetener used in many products, including soft drinks, is getting some guarded support from an unlikely source - the American Medical Association (AMA).

At a meeting in Chicago, AMA delegates backed a resolution that argues that there's no scientific proof that high fructose corn syrup deserves the blame for obesity more than sugar or other caloric sweeteners. The resolution also nixes putting warning labels on products containing high fructose corn syrup.

"At this time, there is insufficient evidence to restrict the use of high fructose corn syrup or label products that contain it with a warning," AMA board member William Dolan, MD, says in an AMA news release.

That's not a green light to guzzle foods or drinks containing high fructose corn syrup.

"We do recommend consumers limit the amount of all added caloric sweeteners to no more than 32 grams of sugar daily based on a 2,000 calorie diet in accordance with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans," Dolan says.

The AMA acknowledges that obesity rates have soared in recent decades, in sync with the growing use of high fructose corn syrup.

But the AMA also points out that people also consumed more calories and became less active during that time and that the body processes high fructose corn syrup much like sugar.

The AMA says it isn't thrilled with the level of research on high fructose corn syrup, partly because there isn't a lot of research on the health effects of high fructose corn syrup and also because of industry funding for much of that work.

Corn Refiners Applaud American Medical Association Decision on High Fructose Corn Syrup

WASHINGTON, DC – The Corn Refiners Association today applauded a decision by the American Medical Association (AMA) that concluded “high fructose corn syrup does not contribute to obesity more than other caloric sweeteners.” The decision was issued June 17 in Chicago at the annual meeting of AMA’s House of Delegates, the organizations principal policy-making body.

“This science-based decision by the nation’s leading medical body reaffirms that no single food or ingredient is the sole cause of obesity. Rather, too many calories and too little exercise is a primary cause,” said Audrae Erickson, president, Corn Refiners Association.

New research continues to confirm that high fructose corn syrup is no different from other sweeteners, according to Erickson. HFCS, like table sugar and honey, is natural. It is made from corn, a natural grain product.

Consumption of high fructose corn syrup has been dropping in recent years, yet the rates of obesity and diabetes in the United States continue to rise. Moreover, many other parts of the world have rising rates of obesity and diabetes, despite having little or no high fructose corn syrup in their foods and beverages.

CRA is the national trade association representing the corn refining (wet milling) industry of the United States. CRA and its predecessors have served this important segment of American agribusiness since 1913. Corn refiners manufacture sweeteners, ethanol, starch, bioproducts, corn oil, and feed products from corn components such as starch, oil, protein, and fiber.

Adjustments Don't Work? Eat More Raw Foods

I went to visit Dr. Jeb at his office in Geneva for my adjustment and he said he noticed improvement in my hypertonic shoulder muscles. I told him I believed last week's adjustment really helped and I had been making smoothies twice a day with a lot of raw fruit. He feels the diet change is contributing a great deal.

I've been telling folks how much fun I am having with my new Rocket that I bought from Kohl's. It makes it fun to get your fruit, fiber, antioxidants, etc. If you'd like some recipes, let me know. Send me a comment in the comments section. If you have a great smoothies recipe, add it to the comments section, as well.

Whenever your chiropractic adjustments are not holding or your progress is slow, nutrition is the culprit (I should say less than ideal nutrition). It's easy to lose our focus on our diets. Mineral and enzyme deficiencies are big problems even if you eat well because most foods in the grocery store lack proper amounts of minerals and cooked foods are extremly enzyme depleteing.

Steve Pavlina has a self development blog and I caught his latest post on eating a raw diet. It was interesting to know when he added cooked foods again to his diet he found them to be very addicting and his fitness performance suffered. He kept track of his interval training and you can read about his results.

Quality is Calling...We Can Pick Up or Let It Go to Voice Mail

Practice member, A.S. called me to let me know she had a family member who had a health crisis. During that time she was sitting with her relative she took advantage of some quiet time and finished reading her copy of The 100 Year Lifestyle.

If you visit the Create Purpose website you see that this book is on my list in the "Chiropractive Curriculum."

A.S. told me because of this family member's crisis, she decided she doesn't want to have a crisis of her own.

The 100 Year Lifestyle focuses on quality of life and it doesn't matter when you start. Right now is the perfect time! I invite you to read "The Evolution of Thought." from the 100 Year Lifestyle Blog. We all know consumer awareness if driving the shift away from crisis care.

As I look back at the changing mind-set, I remember when most people didn't think about their health until a crisis happened. Maybe it was my imagination but I think people healed faster. We ate better food, we weren't so pressed for time, and families remained close because they lived nearby. Television was not as big an influence in our lives and children played outside all day long. Fitness was called fun. Now it is a chore that has to be squeezed in during the busy day somehow.

Even though people took prescription drugs, (on a short term basis) they still healed on their own, but we gave the drugs the credit. Now, we have many lifestyle changes that haven't been good and we're disappointed because drugs don't work. We don't have faith in our own bodies and for good reason: they are stressed beyond belief.

The 100 Year Lifestyle not only makes it "cool" to seek health, it is part of the growing human potential movement.

Enjoy the Journey...it is happening whether you are ready or not.

See you at the table...the adjusting table.
