Doctors Who Jumped Ship (Part 2: Peter Breggin)

Peter Breggin, M.D., Psychiatrist

Who else made the list?  Check here.

Dr. Breggin deserves to be first on my list because I came across his book Toxic Psychiatry in 1995 when I was in the midst of my own bumpy journey.

Ironically, Dr. Breggin was a psychiatrist who helped me discover the chiropractic profession.  He didn't know it, until I wrote him a letter about 12 years later.

Back when I was working as a mental health therapist I was beginning to spin myself into a cocoon.

Like a maturing caterpillar who needed to face new scenery, I was conflicted by the biological theory that espoused drug therapy to help the brain.  Deep down I knew that was something not for me personally and I was grateful I didn't have a mental illness.

Being a fairly new graduate from my counseling program, I was enthralled with the techniques of Alfred Adler, Albert Ellis, and the Gestalt followers.  I was looking forward to forming the supportive relationship people were lacking in order to help them reach their goals with confidence.

It didn't take me that long to realize my clients were not improving. In general, we were trashing their dignity. My clients were looked down upon.  They were not encouraged to stretch their minds to strive towards a meaningful life of independence.  They were coached to just get through the day and eek out some type of existence on a meager disability payment.  Yes, they were chronically mentally ill with deep patterns of dysfunction, but they were short changed by lazy professional attitudes.

If I had someone in my family struggling with his or her emotional balance  I would be on them like a hawk.  Why?  because I am very wary of the mental health system so I don't want my family member talked into something unhealthy.  Doesn't that sound odd coming from a mental health therapist?  Maybe not.  As someone on the inside, I knew in my heart how I would want myself or a loved one cared for.  Someone in the middle of a personal crisis needs understanding, a thoughtful ear, and reassurance that they are going rise above it with a new strength.

Someone in a fragile state doesn't want to be questioned in an impersonal office setting or emergency room worried that their answers will be misinterpreted.  No one wants to be given a stigmatizing label and treated as if they cannot be trusted.

So, at a time in my life where I was at a crossroads realizing there has to be a better way to reach people, I discover a book by someone with the same idea.

I was in a library one day where Toxic Psychiatry was propped up on a shelf of new releases.  I grabbed it and voraciously read it from cover to cover. Here was a psychiatrist who didn't use psychiatric medications.  It was refreshing and exciting to see my thoughts were validated by someone who has dealt with this longer than I have.

Peter Breggin's book is written in an autobiographical style as he gives a chronological story of his experiences helping people reclaim their lives without the risky option of psychiatric medication.

What struck me with Dr. Breggin's narrative, is that he does not fear people. He is comfortable with them.  He welcomes them and is eager to hear their stories. Doctors are programmed to get to the solution as quickly as possible, which in a psychiatric scenario, it is usually medication or hospitalization.  Dr. Breggin is not in a rush to that kind of treatment.  He is able to draw out of his patient's their strengths and weaknesses so they can work out a therapeutic plan that the person can work through with a clear mind knowing where to go for appropriate support.

Dr. Breggin speaks out about the disabling effects of psychiatric drugs.  These types of drugs do not allow someone to accomplish any goals.  Rather they are numbing to the brain and have unpleasant side effects.  He has been an expert witness for malpractice trials and works tirelessly on reforming psychiatry.

At the time I was considering a career in psychiatry, but his book helped me look elsewhere.  I knew there was an important connection between the mind and the body and I realized I needed to learn more about the physical body.

At my position as a mental health therapist I was frustrated to watch my clients struggle with mental and physical complaints.  The psychiatrist would refer them back to their physicians who would report that blood work and other tests were normal.  When my clients came back to their follow up appointments they would say they are supposedly fine physically so their concerns were all in their head.  They were falling through the cracks and no one could help them.

I had also stumbled into a challenging  experience with situational grief and was offered the same drugs my clients were taking.  After all, there was a lock box full of complementary samples provided by the generous pharmaceutical reps.  My immediate response was a polite, "No, thank you.  I need to feel this.  I need to learn from this."

So that self talk lead me away from the mental health environment on to a drug free path.  Now, I realize I was not prescribing medication to my clients, but it was such a roadblock to helping people learn self management, it could not participate in it or tolerate it.  To me, that was unfair to my clients.  I had to be part of a group that could be free to employ natural means to assist the innate healing ability.

Dr. Breggin's book helped me see there was another niche worth pursuing.  Around 2008 I found out he had relocated from Maryland to New York and I wrote him a letter informing him how influential his personal calling and book were to me.  I met him and his wife, Ginger, some time later.  Their strong desire to relieve people of their emotional and mental suffering keeps them busy. Their perseverance is truly needed in our society.

Read one of Dr. Breggin's articles here  https://www.madinamerica.com/2019/06/a-smashing-victory-and-an-insidious-new-threat/

I have more names of doctors who jumped ship.  Stay tuned.

Doctors Not Moved By Drug Company Lies

(Image: Don't Try This At Work https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxyhG58b9Gc)

If Doctors Really Supported Patient Rights, Pharma Would Close Down Forever.

Call to Action: Evaluate how much you tolerate dishonesty when it comes to allopathic professions that focus on peer pressure rather than doing no harm.

I can't speak for any individual physician, and I certainly can't speak for other chiropractors.  Yes, I admit I am not interested in much of what the current chiropractic associations promote.  (That's another topic.)

The truth is out there, but it is ignored.  There is so much fraud and dishonesty with the regulation of pharmaceutical products, I can't understand why there is such a high worship of drugs.

Safety regulations are completely violated If physicians really acknowledge this, they would refuse to write another script.   Listen to Pam Popper's explanation of this huge disservice.   I am stunned by this information.  But not surprised.  Really, if your doctor stood up for you, there would not be another drug given out.  The track record of the regulators is so poor and it has become a joke behind the scenes.  If this was how airplanes and cars were sold, we'd all be riding bikes.

Why do I speak about this?  Because drugs don't heal you.  Your own healing ability within your physiology does the hard work.  You are the healer.  And if you have trouble believing it, you will have trouble healing.

It's not a secret that drugs do harm.  They are toxins, but that tends to be downplayed in an attempt to manipulate body systems. The government's regulations are not followed and the consequences for law breakers are not handed out.

The blatant disregard of safety should make the pubic angry.  People are unwittingly taking drugs assuming they are safe.

Darren Schmidt's video on Akathisia -- What's That? Black Box Warning.

What else can I say about this?  This is why I am here.  This is why we have drug-less healing professions such as chiropractic.

If you truly are ready to take a different approach, I invite you to take part in Ready For Different: BFA Coaching.

Chiropractic's Mental Illness Cure

I gave a talk this week on the depression trap. I spoke on chiropractic's early history of chiropractic mental hospitals. No drugs were used! Probably there was a lot of kindness, empathy and of course...adjustments! Plenty of adjustments!

This article, Chiropractic in Mental Ailments, published in 1957 used the word "cure" because it was highly successful. The statistics showed nearly a 99% rate of improvement. A judge who saw inpatients in his courtroom, tried to pass new laws to include chiropractic in all hospitals.

Because this article used the word "cure" I see nothing wrong with using the word today. We know the scary history of psychopathic drugs and Peter Breggin, M.D., spent his career speaking out on the brain damage caused by medicine's psychiatric treatments. Read his blog. I am always bewildered why folks submit to damaging their own brains.

In the 1957 article, a physicist states very clearly that people are in mental distress when their nerves are physically irritated. It is not in their mind. It is in their bodies! Why should people feel bad about themselves and feel as if they really have little control, especially when told to snap out of it!

The recent discovery that the limbic system extends into the spinal cord absolutely changes how we look at emotional health. It is more physiology than psychology. The spine actually fuels the brain like a windmill generating nerve energy. A lifetime of spinal restrictions is going to have a negative effect. Spinal care is critical for total health.

The group I was speaking to was completely astonished when I showed them old photos of chiropractic mental hospitals located all over the country. Look here for the photos.

They were also astonished when I said I never learned this in chiropractic college. I sought out this information on my own because of my own interest in promoting mental health in a way that is empowering.

Sadly, these hospitals are gone for numerous reasons. Drugs seemed to be the quick fix and chiropractors in the 1960's through today decided to put themselves in the limiting box of back care. To me this does a terrible disservice to those who are suffering with mental stress resorting to prescription pills that steal their freedom.

For more information, ask me for a consult. I will post future speaking engagements in my newsletter.

See you at the table...the adjusting table.

Head Injury Crisis Makes Chiropractic a Crucial Life Saver

This is my recent Citizen article published today. I am adding it to my blog because I can't locate the link on the Auburnpub.com website. As I reread the article, I can't over emphasize how many injuries children sustain on an almost daily basis that affects the brain. The foundation of adult health begins during childhood. Whenever I hear someone say, "Oh, he'll grow out of it," I wince because the person is woefully uninformed of the chiropractic advantage.
Thank you for reading. Thank you for telling the truth to your friends and loved ones.
* * * *

The recent TIME magazine “Tiger Mom issue” contained another child centered article about the dangers of concussions. A survey shows 3.8 million Americans suffer this head injury every year. The number of ER visits for children has doubled between 1997 and 2005.

Sports such as football are given a lot of the blame but 66% of children’s concussions are attributed to regular play activities. It also doesn’t help that children seem to be attracted to trampolines and extreme sports such as skateboarding.

Mild injuries that do not get the attention of parents, coaches and physicians are of concern to chiropractors. This is because the accumulation of jarring hits to the body can do considerable damage to the developing brain.

A brain injury does not have to be a direct hit to the head, either. Any whiplash like trauma such as a blow to the chest can be just as serious. Neck pain in a child is a warning sign the head was snapped around enough to create brain swelling that erodes vulnerable nerve coverings.

The TIME article noted the suicide death of college football player, Owen Thomas, who didn’t have a history of mental illness. Upon autopsy, it was discovered he had physical signs of brain damage indicating a long term buildup of damage in nerve tissue.

With children, their heads are like bowling balls bobbing back and forth on a neck that is more like a slinky. Babies’ heads are cradled very carefully when held by adults but as they grow older and learn to walk it is a different story.

For younger children who have different health problems it is important to consider trauma to the head and spine. When children don’t meet their developmental milestones or they exhibit difficulty learning, their past episodes of falls should be considered.

Stomach issues or bed wetting in a child can be caused by milder traumas. Children who often have colds or bronchial infections have immune systems that are struggling due to past bumps and bruises.

The most heavily researched topic in pediatric chiropractic is injury to the spinal cord and brain stem resulting from childbirth procedures. Babies can be brought into the world unknowingly injured.

This is why regular chiropractic examinations are so important from infancy to adulthood. Neurologists are necessarily focused on the seriousness of concussions making the public aware of early interventions and chiropractors provide similar interventions, too.

Children often do better than adults with chiropractic adjustments and find the experience very enjoyable. Even when children are too young to express themselves, they quickly respond to the calming effect of a spinal adjustment.

Every parent needs to be aware there is real problem of accumulated damage to a child’s brain and spinal cord. A chiropractic assessment can reveal a great deal of information about stressful interruptions in a child’s development.

While children are at risk of damage from mild or severe injuries, the outcomes are very positive when parents are quick to choose chiropractic care for their families.

John Gray: Why Women Need "Venus Work" Not "Mars Work"

John Gray is not just the best selling author of the Mars/Venus books, he is an expert on nutritional cleansing for mental health and relationships!

I recently received this article in one of my Isagenix newsletters: Best-selling author Dr. John Gray already shared the secrets to helping men and women communicate more clearly with his best-selling book series “Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus,” but he says there’s another piece of the puzzle when it comes to creating vibrant, healthy relationships — Nutritional Cleansing.

John, one of our Millionaires and 6-Star Golden Circle member with Isagenix, wasn’t looking to lose weight or inches when he said “yes” to “nutritional cleansing” in 2002. In fact, it was the combination of the amino acids and active enzymes found in our Shake that actually hooked him.

The Brain Matters
“I was researching amino acids at the time and found that they contribute to optimal brain function, which could make relationships better,” explains John. “As we are affected by impurities, we lose optimal brain function and are not able to deal with stress as well. The shake was far superior to any other product I had been testing on the market.”

Gaining Insight with a Weight Loss Side Effect
To his surprise, John lost 16 pounds* after using the products. He decided to take things to another level and get in touch with Master Formulator and Founder John Anderson to learn more about the products and even discuss creating the Mars Venus Wellness Solution™ with special ingredients to suit the needs of men and women. The pair added omega-3s to the Mars Venus Superfoods Shake™ for women for healthier hair, skin and nails and more protein to the men’s shake because men need more protein on a daily basis. They even added a daily cleanse drink, the Mars Venus Super Cleanse™ to give the body what it needs every day to help remove impurities from the body.

Since his discovery, John has shared “nutritional cleansing” with hundreds of people around the world. At first, he wasn’t interested in building a home business, but the opportunity created a residual income that has given him freedom to spend more time on research while producing additional Mars Venus books. Not to mention the fact that it’s also given him more time to vacation with his family in his favorite spot in Hawaii, the island of Maui.

Combat Stress Knowing Your Gender Traits
Now John is focusing his efforts on sharing how men and women cope differently with stress with his newest book “Why Mars and Venus Collide.” He enjoyed sharing more of the practical solutions for handling stress as the keynote speaker at 2009 “Living Your Dreams” Celebration in Anaheim, California in August and believes that “nutritional cleansing” is the answer to many of the stressors women especially experience.

“Women today are under a whole new level of stress because of activities in the work world. That message of you can do it all for many women has caused stress levels to increase and is putting them in constant urgency and emergency states. Those situations create testosterone and that hormone helps men cope with stress, but it doesn’t help women,” explains John. “Network marketing is actually one of the best businesses for women because it allows them the flexibility they need to take care of the home, children and other activities that have oxytocin benefits, the hormone that lowers stress.”

John says our company is especially good for women seeking the right network marketing opportunity because it’s all about nurturing and helping others improve their health, wealth and happiness, all oxytocin-producing activities. But ultimately, he says understanding how men and women function differently is important to know because it can lead to healthier relationships and an even healthier business.

“This a company of happy, healthy individuals and the quality of our relationships is important for our health,” shares John. “ Healthy relationships also translate into a more successful business because by understanding how men and women are different, you can identify each person’s unique needs when you share it with them.”

60 Minutes Questions Drugs for Children

I just watched the 60 Minutes episode about toddlers being treated with drugs for bipolar disorder. Psychiatrists believe 2 year old children can be depressed and manic. A mom and dad are charged with murder because their 3 year old daughter died of heart and lung damage due to prolonged drug abuse, according to the medical examiner. The mother was interviewed saying she was only following the directions on the bottles...
Yes, I said bottles. Three different drugs because the child was "driving me crazy." And, the other children in this family are also diagnosed with mental disorders and there was a huge risk on this child because of a family history.

Here are my questions that were not asked in the 60 Minutes episode:

What is this family's home life like?

What kind of nutrition is this family eating?

Did this child have a traumatic birth?

How healthy was the mom during her pregnancy?

Did this child ever suffer a serious trauma such as a fall or shaking?

Were there any reactions from vaccines, even if they were weeks after the administrations?

What could life have been like if every family member was getting chiropractic adjustments?

I cannot over emphasize the different ways spinal distortions, spinal injuries, and progression of subluxations affect the quality of life of the individual.

Help me spread the word.

See you at the table...the adjusting table.

Stress: What the Mind Possesses the Body Expresses

I found this article online and love the title!!! Enjoy!

........................................................................................

Stress: What the Mind Possesses the Body Expresses

Stress is the underlying cause of 85% of visits to the doctor and includes Fibromyalgia, Headaches, and other Chronic Pain syndromes. If this is so and the research shows it to be true then why do we not recognize these stressors? How is it that we let stress create such problems in our lives? These questions are being studied more than ever before as is noted in the latest issues of Time, News Week, US News and World Report, National Geographic and a host of other weekly and monthly magazines including O, The Oprah Magazine.

If we understand that the underlying cause of stress is a mind body connection response to our thoughts and our bodies response to those thoughts then it makes since. Florence Nightingale, in her book Notes on Nursing written in 1859 stated that volumes are now written on the connection of the mind and the body. Even then she declared that if we help the patents to vary their thoughts we help them get better.

So why is the Medical Community so slow in connecting the two. Good Question and not so hard when you think of our fast paced world and how easy and routine it is for a physician to write a prescription to calm our nerves.

As humans we experience daily stress totally different than say a rabbit in the wild. A rabbit while leisurely feeding will respond with all its senses with any sign of danger. However, unlike humans the rabbit will relax and go on feeding as soon as the signs of danger pass. It has no thoughts of what just occurred, or what might occur or what could have occurred.
When humans sense danger we also go on the alert. Our heart rate faster, our blood pressure higher, our blood diverted to our arms and legs so that we can fight or get the heck out of Dodge. On the other hand, we humans unlike the rabbit tend to proceed to worry about the “What Ifs.” What if the danger comes back? What if it isn’t gone and I just I think it is gone?

When the “What Ifs” set in we are beyond the protecting intentions of the stress response and become distressed. We take a thought and turn it into worry, which creates high blood pressure, fast pulse, etc.

Read the following and then try the exercise: Close your eyes take a deep breathe and pretend or imagine that you are in your kitchen. Look around the kitchen and listen for the hum of the refrigerator. Walk over to the refrigerator. Did you hear your footsteps? Now open the door of the refrigerator? Feel the cool air as it flows out.

You notice a bright yellow lemon and you reach in and take it out. Pay attention to the size, color, temperature, and texture of the lemon as you hold it in your hand.

Now take the lemon over to where you would normally cut up fruits or vegetables. Take out your favorite knife and slice through the lemon. Watch the lemon juice as it oozes out onto the cutting area. Now pick up one half of the lemon and smell the scent of the lemon.

Now open your mouth and take a bite of the lemon. Taste the lemon juice as it passes across your teeth onto your tongue. Taste the tangy tart taste of the lemon as you feel it in your jaw. Go ahead and notice and then swallow the extra saliva in your mouth.

If you are like most who try this exercise then you may have noticed a little sour taste with some discomfort in your jaw and/or extra saliva in your mouth. What you created with just your thought was a physiological, biochemical response in your body – yes, just from a though – So the old saying “We are what we think we are is true.” Therefore, change your negative thoughts to positive thoughts and experience the changes in you.

How do I know if I am stressed?

If you are finger tapping, compulsively eating, biting your nails, having repetitive thoughts you might be stressed. If you have increased your smoking, drinking or drug use you might be stressed. If you are absent or being late for work then you might be stressed.

Prolonged stress can result in heart disease, food cravings, insomnia, depression, PMS, obesity arthritis, diabetes, and multiple other conditions that are a direct result of uncontrolled stress.

The most stressful jobs:
1. Teaching
2. Nursing
3. Management
4. Other professionals
5. Social workers
6. Road transport
7. Police and prison officers

On an average workday, an estimated one million workers do not make it to work due to stress. “Health and Executive Magazine,” claims 6.5 million sick days are being taken every year as a result of stress.

Stress Reduction

Stress affects blood pressure, sleep habits, nervousness, and confusion. Whenever our bodies are stressed – whether the stress is real or imagined – our brains respond as if it is real. Stress, by the way, can come in many forms: an impending deadline, an inability to complete work tasks, or even a verbal lashing from another person. The body’s response is the same regardless of what causes the stress.

Ten Ways to Cut Down on Stress
1. Talk it out. Get support from family and friends.
2. Exercise regularly.
3. Avoid false guilt.
4. Set realistic goals and priorities.
5. Avoid perfectionism.
6. Keep a sense of humor.
7. Hang loose. Set aside idle time to relax every day.
8. Live by the calendar, not the stopwatch.
9. Avoid over indulging in drugs, alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine.
10. Think positively

Taking time out of a busy schedule to relax is very important. Everyone experiences relaxation differently so the key is to relax as best you can. The ability to relax is enhanced by finding a quiet place, creating positive self talk, listening to soft music, day dreaming, or taking a walk.

Try this simple breathing technique to relax and decrease stress. Blow your stomach out like blowing up a balloon. This will drop the diaphragm down and automatically create a deep breath. More oxygen is able to enter into the two lower lobes of the lungs, which has more blood vessels to carry oxygen to the cells.

Exercise

Exercise is the most widely recommended form of treatment for relieving the effects of stress and depression. It increases endorphin release (the bodies natural morphine) along with melatonin (natural sleeping pill) and serotonin (natural Prozac) production, and helps level out blood glucose. Exercise helps us sleep better which also decreases stress.

Think Stress Control

Skipping breakfast is a bad idea.

Starting your day on an empty stomach results in DECREASED ATTENTION and POOR PERFORMANCE. Even if your breakfast consists of something sweet or fatty, which is common, it can still help you get a better start on your workday. It is also true that breakfast eaters are leaner, have lower blood pressure, eat less throughout the day, and are in better health than those who skip the most important meal of the day.

In Conclusion

Stress responds well to meditation, Relaxation Therapy, Self-Hypnosis Exercise, a walk in nature, soft music, get 6-8 hours of sleep and a proper diet with the right vitamin and mineral supplements greatly decreases stress and enhance wellness.
