The "Why Bother" Syndrome

If You Think You Can't Change Course... You're Right

There is a great deal of negativity in the news and we can't let it all get to us. Things may be tough but it doesn't have to consume our lives. We have plenty of wonderful things still working for us, like a hard working nervous system that keeps us alive as long as we are nurturing it with chiropractic and detox living.

There is a lot of the "Why Bother" syndrome going around which correlates with the next article I've included here by Valerie Young who let a crisis be her "growth spurt" and the spring board of her life transformation.

When bad things happen we tend to stop taking care of ourselves and take for granted the important things in life. Look back at your own life and recall when you have done this in the past. I did it when I my father died and other times when I resisted change rather than welcome it.

Why bother?

Why bother losing weight when it is going to be so difficult and frustrating?
Why bother start exercising when I know I won't stick with it?
Why bother saving for a rainy day when there's always a bill that needs to be paid?
Why bother working on the house when it will just get messed up again?

Complacency is bad for your mental health which erodes your physical health.

Subluxation Level III - your feelings, emotions, beliefs, behaviors influence your nervous system health and your human potential.

The value you place on yourself affects how you interact in your world.
Remember,
You get to choose.

If You Think You Can't Change Course... You're Right
By Valerie Young

You've heard the expression that some people see the glass as half full while others perceive the same glass to be half empty? Yesterday I had the opportunity to see this difference in perception in action.

My father and I drove to the airport to pick up my some family members visiting from Florida. It was 100 degrees and muggy. "Knowing" there wouldn't be any parking spaces close to the terminal, my father was inclined to head directly to the back lot where we'd be sure to find a space.

I, on the other hand, was inclined to start with the row closest to the terminal and work my way back. Since my father was literally in the driver's seat, he reluctantly agreed to check out the last row in the front lot. If we didn't find something there, he said, we'd proceed directly to the back lot. Not only did we find a spot, but as we were walking to the terminal we passed a primo front row space. His response? "It probably wouldn't have been there when we were looking."

In other words, I prefer to think that things will work out. My Dad presumes they will not. Not surprising, during his adult life my father held two jobs. He was horribly exploited in his first job and left only at my mother's constant urging. He stayed at his second job for over 30 years. In part, father's long job tenure has to do with that fact that he is a product of at time when there was a different set of rules regarding employer-employee loyalty. You got a good (or even a not so good) job and you stuck with it for life.

There is ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with staying in the same job or town or anything else for an extended period of time. My mother's family has lived in this same area of Massachusetts since the 1600s. My father's family came at the turn of the last century. I love it here in what is known as the Pioneer Valley and despite feeling tremendous pressure after graduating from college to go somewhere new, I have never had any desire to move anyplace else on a permanent basis.

When staying in one job or place too long IS cause for concern though, is when it is not driven by a sense of contentment but by the belief that things will not work out anyway, so why bother. A lousy attitude will kill a dream faster than just about anything else.

If you find yourself automatically driving to the back lot of life, maybe it's time to do an attitude check:

Do you see yourself as deserving of happiness?

Do you think things will probably work out for the best and if they don't, do you see that as an opportunity to try again?
Do you see yourself as the director of your life or as a bit player operating from someone else's script?

Do you think that life generally has it out for you and therefore it is hopeless to even try to change your life? Or do you see life as Helen Keller once described it as being, "an exciting adventure or nothing at all"?

Pessimists THINK a lot about changing course; unfortunately those with a negative attitude rarely ever act on their dreams. If you are prone to pessimism but really DO want to go after your dream of a more meaningful work/life, you may need to first practice viewing things from a positive perspective.

Moving from a pessimistic, hopeless view to an optimistic, hopeful one will not happen over night. It is a goal that must be worked on one day at a time. Start by taking one situation each day and trying to reframe it from a glass half-full perspective. Fake it if you have to. After a while you will find yourself readily being able to not only see the glass of life as half full, but enjoying a long, quenching drink from it as well.

When it comes to successfully changing course, attitude really is every thing. That's because as Henry Ford once put it, "If you think you can or if you think you can't, you're right."

Cortisol and Chiropractic: Hormonal Help

"The more severe the pain or illness, the more severe will be
the necessary changes. These may involve breaking bad habits,
or acquiring some new and better ones."
- Peter McWilliams
..................................

I found this article online as I was looking for more information on stress and lifestyle. This article nicely explains how chiropractic helps manage stress before it manages you.
Enjoy.

Chiropractic and Your Immune Function
Chiropractic recognises the inherent ability of the human body to regulate its internal mechanisms and adjust to the many physical, chemical and emotional stresses that confront us in everyday life. The body's stress response is designed to accommodate temporary circumstances that require a 'fight or flight' reaction. A good example is to imagine you're being chased by a wild animal. In this situation the body has to prioritise the functions that are needed most.

Blood pressure and heart rate become elevated to enable quick muscle response. Non-essential functions such as digestion and the immune system, both of which can be quite taxing of the body's energy reserves, are given less priority. These rapid changes result from the release of large amounts of hormones, known as catecholamines (eg. adrenalin) and cortisol (stress hormones). This response is extremely effective when needed for the short periods of stress that were typical of our earlier primitive lifestyles. Unfortunately the demands of modern life mean that our bodies try and cope with excessive stress levels on an almost constant basis.

Depression, hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol, obesity, cancer, metabolic disorders - especially Type 2 diabetes - and sex hormone imbalances are endemic within Western society. Chiropractic recognises these individual medical complaints as normal physiological responses to unhealthy lifestyles. These symptoms are all profoundly influenced by the presence of increased levels of cortisol and associated stress hormones.

Thus a well functioning immune system is dependent on these hormone levels being kept in balance. In current society, stress is experienced in many ways. Sedentary lifestyle (physical) and poor nutrition (chemical) and emotional anxiety and strain are all examples that can affect us. Whilst some degree of stress is a normal part of life, excessive stress experienced on a daily basis, is undeniably detrimental to overall health. Every effort should be made to reduce stress levels and counteract their negative long-term effects.

Technological advancements have significantly reduced the daily physical activity that was a feature of previous generations. This means that certain health initiatives such as regular exercise, stretching, sufficient rest, good nutrition and ample hydration have become even more important in reducing stress hormone levels as well as their obvious physical and mental benefits.

Another essential aspect of this healthy lifestyle is Chiropractic. It is just as important as eating the right foods and getting enough water. Chiropractic enables people to reach their full potential by allowing their nervous system to function without interference from spinal restrictions called subluxations.

These subluxations have far more reaching effects on the whole body than just causing pain. That's why pain is such a poor indication of health and why it is good to receive regular Chiropractic care, to check and remove spinal subluxations before they become a health issue. Prevention is always better than a cure. Ever increasing scientific research is supporting the link between chiropractic care and improved overall health and not just pain removal. Emerging results from groundbreaking research being conducted in Sydney has confirmed a significant improvement to immune response following chiropractic treatment.

Blood tests taken before and after chiropractic adjustments showed an increase in IgA levels (immune system function) with a corresponding decrease in cortisol levels. These results suggest that chiropractic may be of assistance in helping your body adapt to stress. This is why it is such an integral part of a healthy lifestyle.

Children are amazingly perceptive at picking up on any stress in their parents' lives. Even as babies they are remarkably in tune with our feelings, and the effects of a mother's stress (as well as positive emotions) can even be seen in an unborn child! This, of course, is bad news for most parents, since we are all too often overworking ourselves and feeling the effects of stress.

In order to look after our children we need to look after ourselves. We've all heard it before but it really is important to ensure that we get a good diet, regular exercise and plenty of rest - at least most of the time. And of course, the occasional pampering treatment - so go on, spoil yourselves! After all, you're doing it for the kids!

Did you Know?

Stress in childhood creates an increased vulnerability to stress in later life. Love and positive attention helps to strengthen a child's immune system. Daily routines help to create a stable environment and increase a child's feelings of security, thereby lessening the effects of stress. Numerous studies have shown that breastfeeding helps to improve a child's immune system.

The Body is the Mind: So How Do I Take Care of Myself?

With all this mind-body stuff coming to light in the last decade, how should we be taking charge of our health? Neither the mind nor the body is superior, so if they are equal in relevancy is there a certain order we should do things?

We go for physicals once a year to check our blood work and other tests to obtain baseline information. You know the list, pap smear, cholesterol, mammogram, PSA, colonoscopy, thyroid... the list goes on and on. What do these tests tell us? When something is "not within normal ranges" we feel bad about ourselves. If we are told things look fine, we tend to ignore our health and face stress head on without a suitable plan of defense.

The truth about mental health is, we don't pay enough attention to it. We don't want to feel the stigmatization of a negative diagnosis. We don't know how to take a baseline of our emotional health and monitor it until a crisis happens.

In the book, Undoing Perpetual Stress by Richard O'Connor, PhD discusses how the body is the mind. Emotions, feelings, memory and beliefs settle into the body and make us sick or make us well depending on the type of emotions, feelings and beliefs. The nervous system interprets the information and rewires the body's responses. Candice Pert, PhD, has mapped out in her writings how body, mind, and spirit are inseparable.

Back to my prior question, is there a certain order in which we should do things to maintain wellness? Yes---Look to the spine--get adjusted.

Why? --- Because the spine is the protector of the nervous system. The nervous system is the transport your emotions, feelings, memory and beliefs to your body. So while you are getting or maintaining your physical and mental health, keep up with your chiropractic care so positive patterns can be reinforced.

Remember,
You get to choose.

The Warning Autistic Kids are Giving Us

It is not just a problem for kids and new parents. Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt is revealing how a toxic world is literally taking over our lives. I take this information seriously and so does Dr. Mercola who describes autistic children as canaries in the coal mine warning us to new health problems that are rumbling under the surface.

I cannot do this article justice. I can only give a small summary of the information that I found astounding that may help you make connections between your health concerns and situations you may have never considered. One such scenario is the pregnant mother who has “silent Lyme’s disease” that infects the fetus making the newborn very susceptible to toxic exposures that lead to autism. Dr. Klinghardt talks about microbes such as mold that defensively excrete biotoxins as a survival mechanism. Electromagnetic fields have been shown to augment this defensive excretion. These common findings, as Dr. Klinghardt sees this everyday in his office, are forcing us to refocus what creates healing and what creates degeneration. Many, many of us have weakened immune systems that are becoming more fragile each day because our bodies are programmed to resist normal detoxification. Dr. Mercola’s article is linked her and I urge you to read it over thoroughly and also visit Dr. Klinghardt’s site.

On the chiropractic front, the DNA study is of utmost importance because Dr. Klinghardt points to genetic mutations that make the body’s detoxification system defective. Remember how the DNA study showed chiropractic patients who were regular with their adjustments had a high level of an enzyme that showed the DNA was repairing itself. Diseases don’t just happen. They evolve when a body can no longer defend itself from stress. We can lower our stress levels as much as we can but also need to boost our stress fighting system: the nervous system. How regular and routine are you in your adjusting schedule?

Make Time or Make Mistakes...

What makes health freedom and personal development so important? The opposite is health imprisonment and personal stagnation. There are many people suffering because they don't understand how to use personal development to give them health freedom because it's not exactly taught in schools.

If your parents gave you the insight, you are very lucky. Over time we let the responsibilities of life get in the way of taking the time to enrich our lives with health and vitality. That is when we have to make time or make mistakes.

I invite you to experience the journey with the chiropractic lifestyle. What's so great about an adjustment? Adjustments aren't that time consuming. You see how long it takes to perform one. But the real beauty is what you do with your life as that adjustment is taking hold in your body creating new patterns of vitality.

A person's commitment and understanding of the subluxation makes all the difference. I see many types of people who treat chiropractic like a short term mechanical fix or a useful tool in transforming their lives.

It's not easy to watch people suffer but I watch them every day inside and outside of the office. I listen to people who are not open to the chiropractic story about transforming subluxations to superluxations.

Thankfully I have practice members who are chiropractic spokespeople who tell it like it is. Your enthusiasm is contagious and that's how we will help people discover health freedom and personal development through mind, spine, and intelligent design.

Voluntary or Involuntary Journey

One of my chiropractic mentors recently wrote that there are two types of health care: voluntary and involuntary. Voluntary is for the type of health care people choose because they want to be at their best performance in all areas of their lives. It is planned out. On the other hand, involuntary health care is something that is not planned out. It comes up out of the blue like an accident that requires immediate medical attention. If it is something that makes you miss work or a social event. Perhaps you are home sick in bed. This is certainly involuntary. It is always something that makes us sit back and say:

"Gee, I guess doing back flips without a net wasn't a good idea."

or

"I knew staying up all night for the last three days was going to do me in and make me miss the Superbowl Party."

We often think back after the fact.

But, voluntary health care is when you think ahead.

"I know when I get to the gym three times a week my mind is clearer."

"I am going to get adjusted every Wednesday because I know it makes a difference in my attitude, energy, and my asthma."

What kind of thinker are you?
In Barbara Hoberman Levine's book, Your Body Believes Every Word You Say,"flexible thinking creates flexible bodies."

I invite you to think about your life as a voluntary journey filled with vitality.

You get to choose.

The Power of Forgiveness: Releasing the Sad Subluxation

A practice member was in for an adjustment and while on the table, she talked about the recent movie The Power of Forgiveness. It was sponsored by the Seymour Library. The book by the same name is also available at the library. My practice member said it was thought provoking and added it can be very difficult to forgive.
I agreed with her knowing people can do unimaginable things.

The documentary shows studies that demonstrate people can have forgiving or unforgiving personalities. Holding onto emotions becomes deeply ingrained in a person's physiology.

Chiropractors use the term "spinal learning" to describe a learned response that takes over the body's homeostatic mechanisms. Candice Pert, PhD, author of Molecules of Emotions has illustrated this with the discovery of the opiate receptors which can block pain. She has also written the book Your Body is Your Subconscious Mind. In this book she explains why I say your body speaks when your own mind is in denial.

We can transmit our un-forgiving-ness into our nervous systems.

How can we forgive and forget?

Here is an age old argument. Does forgiving require forgetting? Forgiveness is a decision that helps you dissolve the blockages in your nervous system. Maybe other people don't change but you can let the reverberations of the past weaken and have less of a hold on you.

Chiropractic can help you dissolve emotions you know are holding you back from living fully. Delve into the personal power of understanding the 3 levels of subluxation.

Our goal is to have super-luxation!

Here's an extra treat for you:
