When Medicine is Unscientific

When swallowing a pill seems to be more efficient than changing one's lifestyle, convenience wins over common sense. I'm not impressed when pain and suffering are thriving in our culture of misguided instant gratification.

It is often said chiropractic is not scientific, which is absolutely untrue. But the rumors are all over the place. I attribute this to chiropractic not being understood. Most people still think chiropractic is a mechanical aspirin. And when the insurance companies see it that way, there is a huge population of insurance customers who are denying themselves the exciting benefits of chiropractic.

It is said only 10% of the public uses chiropractic care, although I have seen some statistics as high as 12 or 14%. I can proudly say anyone who is a regular practice member (not patient) under chiropractic care, they have above average intelligence. Congratulations! Your really stand out in the crowd.

The problem I see is people are not making authentic informed choices because it is so time consuming to collect all the necessary information so you can make an educated decision. That's why we put our trust in professionals.

Now is the time to raise an eyebrow when medical profesisonals are bravely standing up and calling attention to their peers who are leading the public astray.

You can read this blog written by Micheal R. Eades, MD who picks apart an article in Obesity that wrongly promotes low fat dieting.

Back in 1991 it was reported in the British Medical Journal that only 15% of medicine was based on sound science and it may seem that number is probably too high.

What else can you do when a medical organization admits medical care is the number one cause of death in America and admonishes other medical professionals to wise up? Read one of my old posts here.

I also stumbled across another post: At War with Lipitor.

I don't want to bash another profession especially when their own members are doing a nice job.

It is important that people make the best health care decisions they can. But I see more people basing their decisions on what insurance will cover, or what will get them back to work sooner. When swallowing a pill seems to be more efficient than changing one's lifestyle, convenience wins over common sense. I'm not impressed when pain and suffering are thriving in our culture of misguided instant gratification.

Health care is about self care, not the latest laser giszmo, chemical meal replacement or stainless steel body part.

Chiropractic is about self-care. Caring enough about yourself to do what it takes to enhance your life so you can be more alive.
