Burning Your House Down Unknowingly

Look closely at this photo of a house fire.  This is an interesting way to look at your health.  The fire fighters are using water to put out the fire.  They represent chiropractic care.  However, what if someone was in back of the house constantly throwing an accelerant in?  What if I told you that the worst accelerants are prescription drugs?

I am talking about this because there are some in the chiropractic profession who want chiropractors to prescribe drugs to their patients as an added convenience.  Yes!  You read that correctly.  A convenience.  The only convenience I can provide you with is the truth about the dark side of taking drugs.

Also, people ask what happened to all the chiropractic miracles?  They are few and far between unlike in the early days of our chiropractic forefathers who delivered adjustments to the spine and people got amazingly well.  The problem today is our bodies are far too toxic from the environment and our own pill popping behavior so chiropractic care doesn't make much of a dent in turning around people's health.

But we can change that!
You don't have to keep adding fuel to the fire unknowingly.

Learn all you can about stress literacy.
Chiropractic is your #1 tool!

The Diet Invites Disease

Our society is burdened with many very debilitating diseases
  • obesity
  • digestive problems (e.g. irritable bowel disease, a.k.a. IBD or IBS)
  • metabolic syndrome
  • autoimmune diseases
  • arteriosclerosis
  • heart disease
  • diabetes type 1 and 2
  • all chronic diseases -> THE diseases of Western countries!
  • hypertension
  • osteoporosis

We have a serious problem with medication usage that doesn't address how these diseases start.

Dr. Wolfgang Lutz was a pioneer in the low carb understanding.  His case studies have shown to be very provocative.  In his book, Life Without Bread, he even talks about cancer and the high carb correlation.  It is a must read.

Here is a paleo blog that also notes Dr. Lutz's wonderful understanding of diet and health.

Physical Therapy & Chiropractic: the Guitar Story

A practice member told me a PT wasn't sure about her going to both PT and a chiro.  That got me thinking about the proper use of both a physical therapist and chiropractor.

We have such a wonderful opportunity to take good care of our health.

Physical therapy is very important.  Everyone should be doing physical therapy everyday.  Physical therapy is a great place to learn how to move properly and maintain your muscle function.  We should be taking these lessons to heart and making them part of our daily routine.

Exercising on a regular basis is essential to long term health.  If someone exercises incorrectly, it sets him or her  up for injury.  Adequate range of motion and muscle rehabilitation are important for recovering from an injury or disuse after an illness.  Physical therapy should transform how we move through life!

If you think of your body as a guitar, physical therapists show you how to strum the strings in such a way that it makes beautiful music.  Poor strumming is not very good on the ears.  Good technique brings out the best tones.

Chiropractors do their part by turning the pegs to get the guitar strings in tune.  They can get out of tune very quickly and re-tuning is important.  And no matter how beautifully you strum the strings on a guitar, if it is out of tune, it is not going to sound good.

Keep in tune and play well!

When Stress Sticks to the Spine, the Body Gets Sick

Lose Weight by Christmas/Keep It Off All Winter - READ HERE

*  *  *  *  *  *
More people are interested in prevention and that's a good thing.  My hope is that prevention is not just early detection of health problems which actually is NOT prevention.  It's just knowing sooner about health problems.

When it come to chiropractic we need to understand what is happening to the body below the surface before problems become pain and poor function.

How do we put stress in its place?  We first have to understand the three types of stress so we can properly analyze what parts of our lifestyle need changing.

Take a look at my recent Citizen article about stress:

How to Need Less Supplements

I've talked with people who buy over $300-$400 worth of supplements a month so they can have better health. I've also talked with people who go to Kinney's or WalMart and buy an antioxidant for $7.00. Who is healthier?

Did you say neither? I hope so.

It is an disputable fact that we need supplements because the food supply is grossly adulterated all the way from the farm to the store and then your home.

Soil nutrients are depleted, processed foods are made from GMO corn and other grains. Sugar use has skyrocketed in the last century giving us some pretty addictive desires for unhealthy foods. Even our mass farmed livestock are over fed grains and chemicals for a better profit outcome.

All that said, even with a steady diet of home cooked foods and fresh produce (as fresh as we can get from the store) we need to supplement with high quality vitamins, minerals, and adaptogenic nutricueticals.

I truly believe a good supplement routine is necessary for optimal health. Do you need to spend $300-$400 dollars a month? No. If you are ask yourself this: Am I feeling better? It is possible you still have nagging health issues.

Should you go to Kinney's and WalMart and buy what is on the shelves? No. You must have more on the label than a cheap price. A supplement company should be researched for its raw materials, bio-availability, and purity testing.

We know we need to make a small investment in supplements but how do we narrow down the choices?

The most important factor is your daily diet. At this point, evaluate how close you are to the Paleo-Primal diet. I say this because if you are not, you are probably taking needless supplements to help you with health issues related to your diet.

If you think your diet is healthy, visit my Myth of the Month website. And stick around on my new Time to GO Paleo blog. More is coming.

When you fix your diet, you will need less supplements.

Ask me about it at your next visit. We will discuss if you are getting enough protein. A poor protein balance can throw off Calcium, Magnesium, and Potassium . More minerals won't fix it. Protein intake will. We can talk about replacing grains with high fat foods that make your appetite happy and your waistline smaller.

What Does Your Iodine Deficiency Look Like?

Get the October 2011 issue of Life Extension Magazine and read about the connection between iodine deficiency and obesity, brain impairment, heart issues, mental disorders, and cancer.

Do you have an iodine deficiency?

Consider this:

1. You don't need to have a goiter to have an iodine deficiency
2. Manufacturers are not putting adequate amounts of iodine in their refined salt products.
3. Once cooked, salt loses iodine content
4. Sea salt has no iodine
5. Reducing your salt intake is also making the problem worse
6. If you eat more vegetables than meat, you are getting less iodine
7. If you exercise regularly you lose iodine in your sweat.
8. A common flavor enhancer for foods derived from the explosive/rocket fuel industry
blocks iodine from reaching the thyroid.
9. Iodine is important for breast health.
10. Breast cancer cells easily absorb iodine and the cells die.
11. Iodine is important for fibrocystic breast disease.
12. Iodine deficiency leads to abnormal heart rhythm.
13. Iodine deficiency contributes to abnormal lipid and cholesterol profiles (can't be fixed by a statin).
14. Thyroid hormone treatment is not good for an already weakened heart. (Iodine deficiency should be looked into first.)

The article is found on page 43.

I'm Not Getting Better

You've tried many different things to feel better. You are healing from an injury and it seems to be taking too long this time. You have nagging little health issues that you tolerate, but they just don't go away.

Let's look at things a little differently.

1. You've tried many things to feel better.
Different view: Something else in your life repeatedly overpowers your attempts keeping you from feeling better.

2. You are healing from an injury and it seems to be taking longer this time.
Different view: More attention is needed now than what was adequate in the past.

3. Nagging health issues just aren't going away.
Different view: They are sticking around for a reason, because something else is sticking around.

Your Body Speaks to You in Interesting Ways
Often we are clueless because we just wish the answers were obvious. Why doesn't my body speak the language of me? Because it can only speak the language of cause and effect with a little nervous system thrown in.

Keep in mind the 3 causes of poor health.

1. Chemical stress
2. Mechanical stress
3. Emotional/Mental stress

Chemical
This includes deficiencies and intoxication. Nutritional deficiencies arise out of poor diet, relying on just food for nutrients, as well as medication effects. Intoxication is not just over- imbibing in caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol. It also includes medications, illegal drugs, and the body's poor ability to detoxify on its own. Chemical stress doesn't allow us to heal properly.

Mechanical
Vulnerable mechanics is due to poor balance, under conditioned muscles, being overweight, lack of sleep, poor posture during activities, repetitive strain, and lack of "conditioning exercise".(I say conditioning exercise because people perform a great deal of exercise that is inefficient and ineffective out of habit.)

Emotional/Mental
Life issues change all the time. We have good days and we have bad days. They tire us out and weaken the immune system. If you have a "worry-trigger." It will get you more often than other issues that don't bother you. If you had an injury or illness look back at the last two weeks and see if a "worry trigger" popped up in your life.

Now re-evaluate your situation and your actions. Look at yourself as if you are watching a movie on TV. What things do you notice are getting in the way of your health? What things are you missing?

The Junk Footprint

In Tuesday's Citizen:

In last month’s article I covered some of the reasons why chiropractic doesn’t always work. For this article I will describe what makes chiropractic work so well. The simple truth is the body will always strive toward healing and restoration when given the chance.

Chiropractic assists the body by clearing out the “junk footprints” that get in the way of normal function of organs and organ systems. We know about junk food, junk email, and junkyards. Junk is a term used to describe anything that is waste, useless, or trash.

Junk accumulation starts the body on a downward degenerative path. We can categorize junk into three types: mechanical junk, chemical junk, and emotional junk. We can stop the junk with improved lifestyle habits, however the “junk footprints” still persist causing harm.

When we expose the body to junk it is like getting kicked in the spine. A “junk footprint” remains. My dad put my footprint in a freshly cemented step when I was two years old. Over time that cute little indentation of my foot took on water, snow, ice and dust particles. Erosion eventually reshaped the step making it unsafe and requiring repair.

A similar process takes place when junk footprints remain in the spine. The delivery of information through the brain, spinal cord and nerves are changed. The body’s future responses will become inappropriately hyperactive or underactive.

This is why people injured in car accidents still have pain long after the initial swelling of whiplash has gone down. This is also why people have digestive discomfort even though they have improved their eating habits. Anxiety attacks and depression can occur because minor stressors connected to past memories can be extraordinarily reinforced by the nervous system.

Take the saying, “Garbage in, garbage out.” It describes a nervous system that has learned negative patterns from repeated junk exposures. For people in back pain who just want to feel better, this explanation may not be interesting. However, it shows why similar people of the same age can have very different states of health.
Chiropractic works by untangling nervous system networks that have gone bad. The adjustment introduces a force into the spine and modifies body responses. Healing becomes more efficient as junk footprints are reduced.

It takes time for the body to heal so it makes sense to help chiropractic work better by avoiding unhealthy habits. People who reduce stress on the body through diet, supplementation, and exercise will notice faster results from their chiropractic care.

Progress is also greatly impacted by mental stress. Patients who demonstrate an inability to commit to their care by blaming work, personal obligations, and time constraints are waving red flags that indicate they will continue to create junk footprints.

Ultimately, chiropractic can make it easier to incorporate healthier changes into lifestyle. The relaxation response, endorphin release, and more normalized brain activity resulting from each chiropractic adjustment will help people feel more inclined to stick with better health habits.

Stop Wasting Gas, Chiropractic Avoids Traffic Jams

Take 9 short minutes to watch this video taken from a chiropractic seminar. Dr. Derrel Pratt sums it so easily. Sometimes we chiropractors make it too complicated.

The first thing he said is the chiropractic message can change your life.

I agree totally. Chiropractic is a message. It is also a lifestyle.

It is not a treatment for spinal conditions, although people in pain who get adjusted do well! It helps them heal better.

But it was never intended to be limited to that tiny scope.

We are encouraged not to limit ourselves in life.

Enjoy the video.

Holding on to Junk Is Up to Us

Jill Bolte Taylor, PhD wrote My Stroke of Insight about her recovery from a stroke.

She used her knowledge of neuroanatomy to guide her rehabilitation. One interesting aspect of our brain/body is the response time for a major emotion to work through the body.

The limibic system will direct a neurotransmitter response of an emotional surge through the body in 90 seconds. At the end of 90 seconds all chemical messengers have been flushed from the body.

We have the power and the choice to let those chemical surges last longer than 90 seconds. She explains that we allow "the circuit to continue to run." (See page 146).

So, if you are in an emotional rush that could be harmful to your long term health if you let it persist, take 90 and then chuck it. We can stop it at 90 seconds.

Here is another interesting point that will help us slow down and rethink how we load our bodies with adrenaline:
The right brain is non-judgemental.
It's our left brain program that contributes old emotional patterns (good or bad).

Dr. Bolte-Taylor made a deliberate decision during her rehabilitation to not resurrect the more negative sides of personalty that included stuborness, sarcasm, jealousy, meanness. She said, "With lots of effort, I have consciously chosen to recover my left mind's ego center without giving renewed life to some of these old circuits.

This is part of the rewiring aspects of motor-limbic-tuning.

Chiropractic Never Works

This is my latest article in the Citizen:

Every so often I come across someone who says, “Chiropractic didn’t work for me.” I wonder if that person tried to use a hamster cage as a fish bowl.

I have a sign posted in my office that says I sell hamster cages but I can’t make them work like fish bowls. This is a humorous way to convey that assumptions about chiropractic need to be corrected so a person isn’t disappointed by unmet expectations.

The truth is chiropractic doesn’t work at all. Chiropractic is applied to the body, but it is the body that works. Under appropriate conditions the body works at healing. Saying chiropractic didn’t work is code for “I didn’t get the results I wanted.”

In the past I’ve tried to iron clothing over a light bulb. (Remember the round ones, not the newer spiral kind.) I read in a magazine that a light bulb can be used when there is no time to drag out the ironing board and iron. It doesn’t do a good job. Ironing and healing have this in common: there are no shortcuts.

When in pain, people want to be rid of it quickly. I empathize. It’s human nature. I know many folks who watched their friends get fast relief from chiropractic. When it was their turn they did not have the same results.

Chiropractic works like jumper cables giving the body a boost. Instead of attaching cables to battery terminals, a chiropractor applies his hands to the spine. If the car or battery needs multiple repairs, the jump is futile.

The nervous system and the body are analogous to the battery and the car. The good news is the body heals. Cars just end up in the junk yard. There are many ways we can make chiropractic care more impactful so healing is optimized.

When an injury occurs, time is always a requirement. Some people need less time. For others it may take longer to heal because of underlying reasons such as nutritional deficiencies affecting organ systems, inadequate rest, and older spinal misalignments that slow down nerve transmission.

There are times when someone feels worse after a chiropractic adjustment. This is usually due to tight muscles that are toxic from drugs, inadequate diet, and poor postural habits. Chiropractors provide nutritional and lifestyle guidance throughout care to assist the healing process and prevent future injuries.

Chiropractic adjustments work by sending signals to the brain so it releases neurotransmitters for relaxation and initiating the body’s repair activity. Accumulated effects of old injuries and other stresses can stall the body’s healing response.

When someone says chiropractic didn’t work, it is not time to give up but time to investigate what else is getting in the way of healing. Chiropractic can help a person realize other health concerns need addressing.

The fish bowl analogy is a reminder that pain relief is not the first goal. Chiropractic teaches us how to work through pain in a way that is strengthening rather than weakening.

Take the Pills Anyway?

I came across this testimonial letter written to Mark Sisson on his Daily Apple Blog. The writer made great strides in obtaining vibrant health by changing her lifestyle. She did so well that she quit all her meds and had her blood work done again to reconfirm that her body had healed naturally.

What did her doctor say? The doctor felt she should continue with her meds anyway. ANYWAY????? And to a low fat diet.

There are doctors who give up their old-school and misguided teachings, but you have to seek them out.

What's the Doc Reading: Walnuts are Drugs?

I didn't say that. The FDA said it. In fact, if you really dissect what the FDA has been doing, you will never trust that this agency has any common sense or good will toward the public. In fact, I wish we could lobby to put the FDA out of business.

Scientific papers have been coming out for years showing how the phytochemicals that form naturally in the growing walnut are very good for heart function by improving the function of the arterial wall and impacting the process that synthesizes LDL cholesterol.

If a company that sells walnuts puts this information on its label or website, the FDA accuses the company of selling illegal drugs that have not been approved for such use.

Now, potato chips processors are allowed to say their product is heart healthy because it is made in a certain oil. Are you kidding me? Frying in high temperatures is in fact very unhealthy!! Where do they get their logic?

The FDA and the FTC doesn't want the consumer to be privy to scientific information? They don't want companies educating their customers. Chiropractors know this too well in the case of Dr. Tedd Koren who was told he couldn't publish pamphlets that were critical of vaccines. He fought for his right to teach his patients how the nervous system worked!!!! Luckily, he won, but it took him years, a lot of money, and without the support of most of the chiropractic profession.

In my book, It Takes Courage to Be Healthy: Living Boldly in a World of Health Lies, this is just what I am talking about.

I ask the health seeker to really be a seeker and discern what is truthful and what is a dangerous lie. Government agencies that we as constituents didn't vote for are put in place to take away our freedom to learn!

This is what I am reading!

Can you cook dinner with the lights out? Neither can your nervous system.

I love this short article. It gets to the point so well.

Taking healthy children to the chiropractor protects them from a world of unneeded grief.

Many adults think chiropractic is reserved for bad falls, back sprains, and headaches, etc. We know they are missing out on much better experiences in life.

This goes even more strongly for kids. They grow so fast from age 0-18 (especially in the womb) that they need chiropractic to help them develop properly.

So, I like the author's question: Can you cook with the lights out? No, you can't cook with the lights out. Can you imagine trying to decide when a skillet dish is ready when you are stirring the dark?

The same goes with the nervous system. It can't do two things at once. When the nervous system is stressed, it can't heal properly.

Finally someone who's been there and understands our health buying concerns

Hey friends!

I signed up to learn more about Beyond Organic, a cutting edge new company. Basically, its founder, Jordan Rubin, is someone I really admire. He was near death and cured himself with unadulterated foods that are hard to find. He then founded a successful nutritional supplement company.

Now he is doing something that has my attention. He has spent the last two years acquiring land to raise healthy, grassfed beef and dairy, as well as the “purest natural spring water” in the United States.

These organic products will be life changing because of their uncompromising nutritional content. Unlike his supplements, they won’t be available in stores—you have to order them directly from his farm.

Along with great products, customers can earn money by sharing the Beyond Organic story. Below is a link to sign up and learn more. You can sign up free for more information. There is no financial commitment until September.

This is the best time to explore Beyond Organic’s mission and products.

Let me know what you think!

Turning Away Obese Patients (Customers) (Clients)

This is an interesting article in Natural News about Florida doctors turning away obese women refusing to take them on as clients.

You can read it here.

Here's my take on it.

1. It's bound to happen. Obesity makes it hard to pin point causes of health problems. Doctors who are sincerely trying to help someone can be accused unfairly for missing a disease.

2. The article specifically states there is a high risk of complications and death when an obese person undergoes surgery. The cost goes up for additional professional training, additional surgical supplies, equipment, etc.

3. Fat tissue synthesizes inflammation which damages organs. Fat tissue pumps out painful inflammation. Taking a pain pill is not appropriate treatment, it just covers it up.

4. It has been surveyed that most doctors do not address obesity with their patients probably because it is now considered a disability that needs protection under the law. Make a comment related to weight and a lawsuit could follow.

5. The average doctor is not a weight loss specialist and probably prefers to refer their patients to those who are specialists.

6. I used the words client and customer because doctors are also in business. Hospitals cannot turn away someone during an emergency, however doctors have every right to choose who they will work with. Patient may be a misleading term. The person seeking health care is still a customer. The doctor sells a service. The doctor can't sell everything. Doctors are not Walmart! Doctors do not sell cures either. Doctors provide a service. They serve. But the customer also has a responsibility to work on his or her personal health. If they lack knowledge, they need to find knowledge.

7. Obesity may be seen as an addiction. The addict has to make the decision to detox and get under continued treatment.

Just my views. This shows a serious problem with health care that won't be solved by changing the way we pay for health care (health care reform). I hate to see people suffer. We all do. The most important step we can take is in our own self care habits.

Chiropractic is not a treatment. It is a mind-set.

When the Physician Says No to Chiro

A practice member asked me this week, what can she say to friends who tell her their medical doctors says they shouldn't go to a chiropractor. The person she was talking about had a disc issue and the medical doctor said chiropractic would damage the disc.

Here's my response:

Tell your friend, the physician may not know there are many types of adjusting techniques, especially gentle, low force adjusting methods.

Something important chiropractors can provide is nutritional counseling. We can teach someone how to feed the disc so it can be less inflamed. Proper chiropractic care and nutrition will also help the nearby joints. Neighboring joints often take on more stress as the injured area is immobilized and becoming calcified.

The most important part of caring for degenerated joints are the nerves. We must keep the nerve energy ignited. Nerve communication stagnates. A damaged joint means damage to the nerve over time. Other areas of the body are also impacted. Most medical specialists don't look beyond the injured site.

If anyone has questions, a chiropractic consult can help someone understand how chiropractic care can address quality of life.

Long term practice members know that but we have to let our non-chiro friends learn this information so that can come aboard, too. Sharing your own story is the best way to get the chiropractic message to everyone.

What's the Point?

Someone came to me recently for an adjustment and complained she stopped losing weight while following a very popular diet program. She was disappointed because she was staying well below her allowed points but not getting the results she expected.

She was pleased with her intial weight loss in the beginning but the improvements came to a halt a few months ago. This confused her because she put in a great deal of effort adding exercise to her routine.

She was feeling so bad about herself she thought about giving up and just accepting this was the body she was supposed to be in for the rest of her life. (A very common dialogue people carry on internally.)

After talking to her for a few minutes I realized she was cutting down on a very important food group that would have allowed her to heal adequately from the back sprain she suffered after a weekend of gardening. I explained her injury would not have slowed her down as much if she was not depriving herself of this food.

She also was eating too much of the foods she was told could be eaten in unlimited quantity. She was shocked to hear this information. I gave her some resources to look over and her determination returned with a vengeance.

Was it the adjustment or the quick coaching that perked her up?

If you want to find out what misinformation she was given, come in for a "power surging" adjustment and I'll fill you in.

See you at the table...the adjusting table.

Are Your Eating Beyond Organic?

Read this doctor's rave review:

Are You Eating Beyond Organic?

Many of you may know my good friend and natural health expert Jordan Rubin, CEO of Garden of Life, and author of The Maker's Diet

Jordan is about to launch a new company called "Beyond Organic," which will offer the world’s healthiest foods, including:

· Grass-fed beef
· Really raw cheese
· African inspired 100% Green-Fed cultured dairy beverage
· Living spring water with unsurpassed purity
· Botanically infused spring waters supporting energy, diet, fitness and beauty
· Probiotic infused omega-3 certified organic dark chocolate
· The first probiotic infused spring water to support digestive and immune system health.

There are MANY significant features that set these foods and beverages apart from what you would find in health stores.

For example, we have all seen "organic" and “grass-fed” beef at Whole Foods. But did you know that organic beef requires that the cows consume 30% grass? Only 30%!

Jordan Rubin's new company is taking 8,000+ certified organic acres in Missouri and Georgia to raise cattle that are free roaming, Green-Fed, and genetically superior cows. (By the way, Green-Fed is a more correct description than grass-fed, and you will learn more about that in future newsletters). You can click HERE for several videos that describe the products.

One reason I am very excited about this company is rather than putting this food in health food stores, “Beyond Organic” will be skipping the middleman and will ship these foods directly from their farm to your family! It has always been a huge pain for me to try and get grass-fed beef, and especially raw dairy products. But now, with Beyond Organic, the foods and beverages come to me!

Another feature that sets this product line apart is the infusion of clinically studied probiotics. Probiotics are the naturally good flora that are so important to supporting digestive function and boosting immune system health. Also, the dairy products are produced by cows with specialized genetics that produce milk that is highly tolerable and very digestible.

How to Live Beyond Organic

The really great news is you can literally be one of the first people in America to live Beyond Organic. All of you have recommended healthy eating options to others, and now you can share with those you know and love how they can consume the healthiest foods and beverages available and be compensated for doing so. Over a decade ago, Jordan started Garden of Life, one of the leading nutritional supplement companies in America in his parent's friend's garage with his dad's credit card and a dream. Now you can be part of Jordan's new vision. This is truly a ground floor opportunity and I jumped at the chance to become a part of. And now, I am asking you to join me.

Want a Head Start? Start with Chiropractic.

This is my latest article published in the Citizen: May 17, 2011.

I had a wonderful time speaking to a group of high school seniors recently. It was very refreshing because they didn’t know anything about chiropractic so I didn’t hear the usual conversations that often come up regarding chiropractic.

When I talk to groups of adults I hear the typical questions about someone’s back pain even if it is not the topic of my talk. People seem to be programmed to discuss their spinal surgeries, carpel tunnel syndrome and whiplash when they meet up with a chiropractor.

While I really feel for people who are struggling with long standing pain, I am trying to share a different message about health. People with poor health are looking for reassurance that it is not all in their heads. I truly believe it is not all their heads, but they need to turn their heads in a new direction.

The high school students I spoke to had a fresh outlook regarding health maintenance. The first thing I said to them was, “All disease is the same, so don’t get bogged down in the details.” I explained why it isn’t that complicated and we can avoid feeling anxious over every breaking news story about a disease.

This gets people’s attention because I am asking people to rethink healing. I had to give up old ideas myself; otherwise my own health would have been a personal struggle. I grew up thinking “things happen to you,” but, now I know why. Patterns are memorized by the nervous system as we experience events and behaviors. The same way we learn how to ride a bike is the same way the nervous system reinforces strength or weakness in the body.

Endocrinologist, Hans Selye, made stress a household word so we could understand how repeated exposures of unhealthy events deplete the body of its survival reserves. Scientists use the term “neuroplasticity” to describe how experiences can positively or negatively change the brain.

Because the spinal cord is an extension of the brain, chiropractic can provide the fastest way to reset nervous system patterns like rebooting a computer. This has been shown in experiments using EEG brain scans before and after chiropractic adjustments. Immediately after adjustments, EEG readings showed a higher state of relaxation, health, and healing.

All disease is the same because the stress response of the nervous system is always the same as it attempts to protect the body. Disease symptoms will present differently from person to person depending on each person’s state of health and nervous system patterns.

During my talk I pointed out the various times in my life when injuries and life style choices repatterned my nervous system. Looking back I realized these events could have spiraled into a debilitating condition had I not used my chiropractic knowledge to make changes.

I wish the graduating seniors much success and good health. They get to start young with this information but anyone can take a different look at their health and use chiropractic to change their healing patterns.

Chiropractic 101: Where's Your List?

When you visit my website I do not have a list. Many people expect to see the list of all the things chiropractic helps. Or more the of the kinds of conditions that chiropractic is most well known for treating. [Newsflash ** We don't treat anything because all parts of the body are inter-related. Chiropractors don't single out one over another]

I don't have a list. Because it is wrong.

Reading "the list" on a website is the wrong way to decide to go to a chiropractor.

Here are a few reasons why:

#1 - Self Diagnosis - it's okay, you might be spot on but you need to be open minded to the actual way chiropractic influences the body. If your curiosity gets you through the door of my office, I welcome you. But, be ready for learning how to empower yourself in a way not presented to you by the medical arena.

#2 - Self Diagnosis - on the other hand, if your assumptions keep you out of the office, you are missing out on a great healing opportunity. Maybe you need healing from something else that you haven't considered?

#3 - You don't have to be in pain to get adjusted. Revisit this blog post about people without pain getting even better when adjusted.

#4 - Warning Signs? - We usually wait until pain shows up before we take action, but what if I taught you some more important warning signs that are not painful?

#5 - If I limit myself, I also limit you. Should I turn people away if they have a condition that is usually not connected with mainstream chiropractic? Should I turn away a pregnant lady? A child? Someone with an immune disorder? Someone with cancer? I take care of people, not diseases.

You can live your Best Life Always, or you can just put out fires.

So, if I put a list on my website with 10 or 15 skeletal issues that chiropractic might be good for, it makes people think they may not be suitable for chiropractic care. I never want someone to be in the dark about chiropractic.

You won't see a list at my site.

See you at the table...the chiropractic table.

Patternology

Patternology is the best word to describe chiropractic.

People have their own notions of chiropractic.

I had no notions when I first researched chiropractic as a career change. I wasn't looking for pain relief, but I was looking for a better way for people to open up their world. And it all comes down to patterns.

We are bright thinking people. We have invented great technology. We sent scientists to the moon. But we are very simple. We run on patterns-- the neurological patterns memorized in the brain and spinal cord.

Are you getting adjusted because you are in pain?
Nope-you really have a negative pattern that if continued would develop into a degenerative disease through the inflammation response.

Got that?

So, you fell down. You got bruised. You were sore for a while and then you felt better. What you didn't notice was the shift in the spine that changed the subtle transmission of nerve energy so the next stressor that comes along responds differently. Most of our stressors are emotional or chemical (diet/toxins).

Your body adapts and these adaptations change your healing patterns.

Chiropractors like to use the term subluxation. Sub means less. Lux means life.
A subluxation is an altered state of the nervous system where organ and motor function meet at the spinal complex.

Basically, the patterns have been changed as the body adapts to stress. But we don't want to adapt so stress takes over. We want to body to defend itself and remain strong.

The first thing you need to do is interrupt the pattern and rewire your brain's defense response. Chiropractic does this with adjustments.

You support your adjustments with nutrition, detoxification, exercise, rest and stress management.

We can live our Best Life Always or we can just put out fires.

See you at the table...the adjusting table.

When Prescription Drugs Cause Nutritional Deficiencies

In my office, I keep a list of prescription drugs that cause nutritional deficiencies so I can remind folks they need to increase their supplementation otherwise their health is going worsen over time.

Blood pressure is often caused by a magnesium deficiency. Blood pressure medications will deplete the body of magnesium even further. See the problem?

I was looking online for a more thorough list since there are so many new brands of drugs, and it took me a while to find a good, informative site.

Click here to use this site.
Here is another article with a number of examples.

Cholesterol meds are notorious for deplete ting the body of CoQ10. This leads to a weakening of muscles, including heart muscle. CoQ10 is already severely depleted by age 20 because the body makes very little of it by then, but making it worse with a drug is a problem.

Most pain meds deplete trace minerals. The body will not naturally cleanse itself when trace minerals are lacking.

Keep these lists on hand if you are thinking about taking a drug so you can really consider the risks. Often there is a natural solution if you look for it.

And don't forget chiropractic to speed healing from past nutritional deficiencies.
Remember the sign posted in my office:

Chiropractic without Nutrition
or
Nutrition without Chiropractic
Is like building a house without a roof.

The Body Knows Something We Don't

*******************
Here is my latest Citizen article in the April 19th edition.
********************
Sometimes the results we want are not the results we need. I was reminded of this recently when my son was home from school recovering from an illness.

The parent in me wanted him to get over it quickly so he could be a happy energetic kid again. I also hoped I didn’t have to modify my work schedule too much. But as it is said, “Life happens.”

As a chiropractor, my hope was to adjust him so he could get a good night’s sleep and then wake up feeling better. When that didn’t work according to my expectations, I adjusted him again since he was still lethargic and tense.

Back in the early days of chiropractic it was very common for the chiropractor to stay up with a family in their home and adjust a sick person numerous times throughout the night. The purpose was not to provide quick relief, but to assist the body as it cycles through the immune response.

I remembered the paradoxical lesson taught to me by other chiropractors that an adjustment will lower a fever or do the opposite and bring it on if that is what the body needs at that moment. Waiting it out with my son, I adjusted him five times in five days.

When it comes to the nervous system, it just gets right to work summoning the glands and organs to get busy. It doesn’t ask our permission first. But, being sick doesn’t always mean we should impulsively respond to symptoms because we might interrupt an important function of the body.

It isn’t far fetched to hear of someone vomiting soon after an adjustment. When stress is removed from the nervous system a fast release of toxins can occur. Some people are so tired after an adjustment that they have to immediately take a nap.

At times it can be more impactful to reverse our thinking. We have become so technologically advanced that we want to use pills, injections, and therapy machines all the time. But the nervous system never needed upgrading and we’ve forgotten that.

Borrowing John Gray’s famous saying, health care can be like “Mars and Venus” trying to have a conversation. The nervous system has its priorities but our emotional side doesn’t want to sit quietly and listen.

Chiropractic can be the marriage counselor teaching us to be more patient. The nervous system is only as good as the messages it is communicating. Lifestyle stress can send the nervous system an overabundance of demands.

As in any relationship, the wrong things can be said at the wrong time causing irreparable damage. Or the opposite can happen. Sometimes the damage festers below the surface when there is no communication.

My son needed to have a stronger immune response. The fever was necessary so his body could keep pathogens from spreading through his body. The adjustment didn’t make it quick, but made it just right. It’s a good lesson for me as I help others manage their stress.
