Unraveling the Cholesterol Mystery in Women
Unraveling the Cholesterol Mystery in Women
Cholesterol: how high is too high, and how low is too low?
Did you know that a healthy cholesterol level is actually between 175 and 250? Cholesterol performs many important functions in our body, so it is dangerous to reduce overall cholesterol below this level.
The lower the number goes (down in the 120’s or below), the more hormone dysfunction both men and women will experience. It is not uncommon for women to experience infertility and/or miscarriages at this dangerously low level.
And, here’s another surprise – cholesterol levels might rise to 300-400 in women during the last trimester of pregnancy, and during their menopausal time of life. Both of these occasions in a woman’s life are times of great hormonal fluctuations, and the rise in cholesterol numbers serves to protect the woman’s body and guide it through this hormonal transition.
After birth, and post-menopause, the cholesterol levels normalize back into the 175-250 range IF the woman is eating a healthy diet rich in essential fatty acids (fish, flax and olive oils) and fiber.
Celebrate the hormonal symphony of life going on in your body...naturally! If you would like further nutritional information, or general information about normalizing your cholesterol levels in a healthy manner, contact Sharon Grimes, Certified Natural Health Constultant/Educator at 315/252-2676 at the New Hope Natural Health & Wellness Center, 181 York Street, Auburn.

Chiropractic Teaches Us to Look Deeper at Health Questions
Chiropractic adjustments can be really awesome. Most people feel positive changes very quickly. That's great news to hear. It also moves us to a different place when it comes to understanding health. Because chiropractic looks at the body as a strong healing force. The body has its own power. Sadly we hear more negative messages about our own abilities to heal and handle life's stresses.
The latest news today has come out about cholesterol levels and our cholesterol levels are better than what they were 20 years ago. And yes, statin use has increased 5 times since then. That is not good news. If we are relying more on chemical manipulation, we've learned nothing.
It pains me to hear this news story because cholesterol is not the cause of heart disease. Inflammation is the biggest danger to heart disease. And what's worse...people still worry about good cholesterol and bad cholesterol when there is no difference between the two.
These lies continue to persist and it breaks my heart to know people still believe them.
I had my blood tested last week to show my practice members that you can eat eggs and butter, which I do everyday. I follow a Paleo/low carb lifestyle. (Avoiding legumes, grains, and sugar).
My cholesterol is 201 ("they" want cholesterol to be below 200.) Personally, I think my cholesterol needs to be higher for better health and resistance.
My triglycerides are 66. (under 150 is ideal.)
In chiropractic, the body is intelligent and we must not block the delivery of intelligent information through the nervous system. Different stresses interfere with the transmission of appropriate nerve impulses to keep us alive. When we understand how well equipped the body really is, we can question some of the health care practices that are considered mainstream and make a true educated decision for our own health freedom.
If you want more information come in on Thursday nights for a "Lied to Death" health seminar. Call me to make your reservation.

Cholesterol Lies We Will Take to the Grave

Muscle pain and weakness are big signs your body tissues are breaking down. Let that last part of the sentence sink in. Body tissues are breaking down. Since we don't just disintegrate instantly like something out of science fiction, we still need to take this situation seriously so we don't accelerate the problem with over the counter drugs, poor nutrition and dehydration.
Dr. Mercola wrote another article on the cholesterol myth that makes people think they can't live without statin drugs.
READ IT HERE
He notes cholesterol is a life saving component of cells keeping cell membranes intact. It is so important the liver recylces it. But we are on a quest to keep it low???? That's like starvation.
Statin drugs actually activate a gene that causes muscle atrohpy. Talk about accelerated aging. Other side effects are increased cancer risk, depression, dizziness, nerve damage in the hands and feet, cognitive problems such as memory loss, and liver problems.
Cholesterol will rise when the body is trying to protect itself. We need to find out why it is stressed and reverse the stress (instead of drug it).
Often stress responses become unhealthy patterns memorized by the nervous system. Be sure to "unwind" the nervous system with chiropractic adjustments.
Cholesterol is a direct response to inflammation. The better approach is ask why is the body so inflammed?
Here are some reasons from Dr. Mercola:
•Oxidized cholesterol (cholesterol that has gone rancid, such as that from overcooked, scrambled eggs)
•Eating lots of sugar and grains
•Eating foods cooked at high temperatures
•Eating trans fats
•A sedentary lifestyle
•Smoking
•Emotional stress
I will also add this: dehydration.
Please look at the logical reasons the body is stressed.
Our bodies are not defective. It does all it can to preserve your life.
You should, too.
See you at the table...the adjusting table.

At War With Lipitor!!
Why am I at War with Lipitor?
So you have it pretty easy. Just go to your favorite pharmacy, hand over your prescription, pull out your insurance card and that one month supply of statin medication priced over $100 is only a $20 dollar co-pay out of your pocket. Everything is good. And everyone else took care of most of the work for you.
So what is wrong?
Isn't it too easy?
It is too easy. The real work would be to look at how choleterol was discovered, what scientists thought it proved, and why studies are showing the majority was mislead.
What is the real cause of heart attacks? Cholesterol has very little to do with it.
What are statin drugs doing to the heart? There is a rise in congestive heart failure.
Why do people with low cholesterol have shorter life spans? Because cholesterol plays a vital role in hormone health.
Before anyone decides to take a statin medication, he or she needs to realize there is sacrifice with very little reward. This is not a win win situation. Before anyone makes a decision, he or she needs to be well equiped to make an informed decision.
Most people are not well informed enough to make an informed decision.
Numerous organizations such as the Life Extension Foundation, Health Keepers Alliance, Weston A. Price Foundation and Dr. Mercola are speaking out about the dangers and corupt politics with satin medications and what the public is not infomed about heart health.
You won't hear about them on a TV commercial. Take the time to look at what information they offer.

The Heart of the Matter: You Are Only Getting Half the Story (Part 3)
After watching the 2015 documentary film, The WIDOWMAKER, I felt compelled to blog about other information regarding heart health to round out the discussion.
The film addressed technology for the problem of death due to sudden cardiac arrest, but it did not delve into the long occurring breakdown in health that got people into trouble in the first place.
So, I offered 6 points of information and covered 1-3 in my Part 2 blog post.
What's Missing?
1- We need to talk about the nervous system
2- We need to talk about collateral arteries
3- We need to discuss why animals don't get heart attacks
4- We need to stop talking about cholesterol and change the subject to inflammation
5- We need to talk about the Jupiter study
6- We need to talk about the Poly-pill study
As a chiropractor, I offer people natural ways to maintain their health. In fact, anything unnatural adds more stress to the body which is ultimately problematic and illogical. These natural ways allow them to achieve health with their own efforts (with the exception of chiropractic: someone else has to adjust the spine, but it is still a natural approach) giving people a sense of empowerment and accomplishment.
When someone is in the midst of a health crisis, things are pretty scary and the level of anxiety pushes someone into a vulnerable state of helplessness.
When someone is in an emergency situation, the trauma team at a hospital intervenes. A life is saved with technological advancements, but the patient now has the daunting task of finding new life style habits to prevent a recurrence. I don't believe it is daunting because the freedom and sense of personal achievement is powerful in healing. On the down side, the medical establishment turns to a slew of maintenance prescriptions that need constant monitoring for side effects.
I do not prescribe drugs. I don't want to. As a consumer of health products, I am aware of the limitations of medicine and the risk of chemicals in the body. I am also aware of the limitations of a body riddled with tissue damage. When your tissues are drowning in the acidic soup of inflammation, the true source of inflammation must be addressed, and drugs only add to the fiery soup. My goal is to educate people on what is actually needed to stay alive and thrive.
My dad died in his sleep from a coronary occlusion. But how am i sure of that? The autopsy found the blockage, but was it really his nervous system strangled under inflammatory conditions? It was a long time ago when he was constantly given a clean bill of health after running a few minutes on a treadmill once a year. His numbers were perfect according to his doctors . He was taking blood pressure medication along with bile acid sequestrants. I can't remember how low his blood pressure was under medication, but his doctors were pretty happy.
Now I blame his love of margarine for his death in his early 70's. But I need to consider multiple factors affecting the state of his nervous system. He was exposed to a lot of chemicals on the job that could have made his arteries stiff. The bile acid seqestrants interfere with nutrient absorption, so I believe he lost minerals like magnesium and B vitamins that are critical for heart function.
According to the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation, we're no better off than 20 years ago. Some websites state heart disease has decreased, but it is still the number one cause of death. And what about quality of life?
4- We need to stop talking about cholesterol and change the subject to inflammation
Author, David Seaman, states in his book, The Deflame Diet, cholesterol is "an 'innocent bystander' being unjustly blamed for clogging arteries." He also cites recent studies that show inflammation is the culprit in atherosclerosis, not cholesterol. Cardiovascular researchers know this is the case and the old view is no longer substantiated in the literature. (See Chapter 20 of The Deflame Diet) There are so many other authors out there who have already covered this topic I don't feel the need to give my readers a science lecture.
Chronic inflammation is an underlying cause of heart and vessel dysfunction. But you have to learn about it on your own because the medical establishment still tells you to eat low fat. Processed food and soft drink manufacturers give money to health associations. They will all tell you to eat anything in moderation so the money keeps flowing.
The most inflaming foods are sugar, grains and seed oils which tends to add up to 60% of the average person's diet. Asking someone to change 60% of his or her diet can create quite a panic, so there needs to be some type of emotional preparation. Still, freeing someone from an inflammation catastrophe has numerous benefits in addition to improving heart health.
5- We need to talk about the Jupiter study
Statin medications are the doctors' favorite for reducing cholesterol. But, actually measuring if patients are better off is very difficult to prove. I recently listened to talk by David Diamond who had to evaluate his health status. Fifteen years ago he was overweight and had terrible lab numbers. He has improved all his heart disease risks by eating a low carb high fat diet and has never taken a statin medicine. I liked his approach with the audience. I liked that he was straightforward about the carbohydrate problem regarding overall heart and blood sugar health. I am impressed that he is a neuroscience researcher. He understands the brain and mental function. His critics complain he is not a heart expert, but they are missing the point that the brain and heart need the same nutrition for health. He certainly knows how chemicals damage the brain!
He also has been critical of statin studies that poorly state their case of effectiveness yet media talkers brag about a number that is really insignificant yet blown up as major breakthrough in managing heart conditions.
Read here: a summary of his objections to the Jupiter drug study.
What I find interesting and helpful is really delving into the meaning of cholesterol since low cholesterol sets people up for poor health increasing their risks of infection and cancer. Older people who have higher cholesterol in actually in better health, so it is seen as protective. As far as the damage to the brain, this is right up Dr. Diamond's alley. Here in this link he reiterates his years of work in a rebuttal after other professionals complained of his debate with another doctor on a radio program.
Dr. Diamond has never taken a statin and 15 years later he has had no heart attacks. Imagine that! What I find comical is that his doctors didn't like the fact that he used a low carb high fat diet to regain his health. Here is a video of one of his entertaining talks.
6- We need to talk about the Poly-Pill study in Part 4.
I'm sorry that I'm taking so long to write this. It takes a while to gather the information, even though it is readily available on the internet. If you read David Seaman's The Deflame Diet, you will learn about the poly-pill study of researchers who want everyone over the age of 55 to take a daily pill that contains 2 blood pressure meds, an aspirin, a B vitamin (synthetic, of course), and a statin. They did a 12 week study and took out a patent on their idea. I'll let you know about this in Part 4.
Thanks for reading.

I Want Equal Time: Cholesterol and Heart Health
Demanding equal time is surely something we need to see in a country the promotes free speech. Access to balanced information is something we deserve. The fact is that mainstream sources of health information is one sided most of the time. The drug companies own the TV news outlets. Without going into the specifics of fraudulent activity in science, health seekers certainly have the ability to weigh the information and come up with their own educated opinion when other sides are presented to them.
But if only one side is shown, how can you exercise your thinking brain???????
Cholesterol is a huge topic. People are in a panic when their blood work shows a cholesterol that is considered high. Unfortunately, people don't realize that number goes up and down over the course of a day. I was only aware of that when I watched a lecture from an individual who measured his cholesterol obsessively just to understand it better himself.
Just knowing many people have "normal" cholesterol and still have heart attacks should make us pause and rethink the true culprits that damage our health.
The information is out there, but you have to search carefully. You may be the one who educates your friends and family.
David Diamond has devoted years dissecting cholesterol research. This is a long, but thorough video:
Here are some shorter videos on the questionable benefits of heart interventions.
Do you really want to help statins become the first drug to reach $3 trillion in sales by next year??? Why does anyone promote a toxic formulation that is known to damage mitochondria? Click here to watch this video: The Remarkable Uselessness of Statin Drugs
As I said: You can decide for yourself, but only if both sides of the story get equal time.

High Cholesterol Isn't A Disease---It's Just a Lab Value

The cholesterol theory is just that -- a theory. Who has proven it? And, statin drugs make no difference in someone's chances of dying. But these drugs certainly are a big deal in taking away quality of life.
Dr. Michael R. Eades writes a great blog article about the cholesterol trap and medical care protocols. Click the link below to get his view on screening tests that can steer you in the wrong direction.
Why am I so focused on the "cholesterol junk" forced upon us? This is one the most annoying examples of what many in the natural health business call Health Scare (It is far from health care). Fear is used to manipulate people into doing unhealthy things like take "maintenance drugs" that maintain apathy---not health.
As a society, we hate ourselves. We truly hate ourselves and I see it in how we treat our bodies. We don't believe we are strong. We don't believe we were given great intelligent bodies. We quit trusting our instincts.

The Worst Health Problem: Do You Have It?
(Image: Dr. Ford Brewer, YouTube)
When I talk to folks, I notice their concern and fear with certain health problems. And it's not always cancer, even though it is assumed to come with an inevitable death sentence. (Here are different perspectives on cancer: The Cancer Culture & Is Cancer on the Rise? )
The top of list seems to be arthritis and clogged arteries.
People are especially frightened of arthritis. I was a bit freaked out when I had neck Xrays at age 29. I was not in any pain, but the early formation of spurs were evident. Today, I do not have pain, and I have no desire to get new Xrays. (It is common knowledge that imaging findings do not correlate with pain levels or predict pain.)
The media has endless commercials for slow release pain medications. When many of us watched our grandparents live in a tiny world because their activity levels were restricted by pain, we all cross our fingers and say: "Not me. Please, not me."
AI Summary from Google:
Hip replacements are one of the most common and fastest-growing procedures in the US, and are considered one of the safest and most reliable treatments in medicine. They can last for 20 years or more, and are often a lifelong solution for hip arthritis. About 95% of patients experience relief from hip pain after surgery, and 90–95% of implants remain viable 10 years later, and 80–85% remain viable after 20 years. However, hip replacements can fail due to reasons such as instability, infection, loosening, or implant failure, which can be a burden for patients and the healthcare system. NIH article
What did we do for folks before hip replacements were popular? Did we just ignore people's pain and tell them to suck it up? Perhaps we were healthier back then before the our food supply turned into franken foods? We were more inclined to exercise back then? These are fair questions.
More AI input:
According to NCBI, 171 total hip arthroplasty (THA) procedures were performed between 1970 and 1980, which is 5.3% of the 3,219 THA procedures performed between 1969 and 2006. The University of Orthopaedic Department also performed 2,669 Charnley-Mueller THA procedures between November 1970 and February 1982
The other scary diagnosis that has everyone stressed is metabolic syndrome/heart disease. (Not to mention constantly worrying about it is not helpful.)
They are obsessed with their cholesterol numbers which can go up and down. (Reasons for sudden increase in cholesterol) Cholesterol is not associated with heart disease but old habits die hard, especially when there's a lot of money to be made from statin meds. ($14.1B according to AI.)
Here's the funny thing, there are better lab numbers that correlate with heart function as they relate to the fight or flight response such as norepinephrine/catecholamines.
Now that I'm researching some stats regarding these two topics, I come across this:
People with osteoarthritis are 3 times more likely to develop cardiovascular disease or heart failure. **** This blew me away. READ HERE
At least this article cites the serious problem of NSAID pain medications as a risk for heart disease. The Mayo Clinic admits this side effect, but doesn't explain why.
Some commonly used NSAIDs include:
- aspirin (such as Disprin)
- ibuprofen (such as Nurofen)
- naproxen (such as Naprosyn)
- diclofenac (such as Voltaren)
- celecoxib (such as Celebrex).
Chiropractic is your springboard.
Chiropractic offers something different. It must be applied differently with its own different language and outlook.

Lipitor and Professionalism
This medical doctor was telling his peers to always prescribe a statin drug otherwise they'll be looking at a lawsuit if the patient has a heart attack.
This is quite disconcerting to me because lawyers are telling doctors how to practice. Cholesterol is just one part of the heart health picture. What if someone had a heart attack because of a non-cholesterol cause? How does a doctor defend him or herself from a sympathetic jury?
The incidence of heart failure is now higher than heart attacks and heart attacks have only decreased slightly. So, tell me how the statin marketers have manipulated the numbers?
Has anyone talked about the elderly doing better with higher cholesterol?
Visit the Weston A. Price site
Well, if doctors are more worried about lawsuits instead of what it really takes to teach people how to be healthy, it is a sad sad time for Americans.
We've got to do our own homework. Learn all you can about the pros and cons of any chemical you want to consider ingesting.
No one puts that pill into your mouth but you. No one will lie down in the coffin with you.

Theft from Mother Nature
The design of prescription drugs is guided by knowledge obtained from plant –based predecessors, which are commonly sold as nutritional supplements. Drug companies obfuscate this. They like people to think drugs are the only option and that they intuitively invent them out of thin air.
Mother Nature has traditionally been the guide for the design and synthesis of new drugs. Check out these examples.
Ritalin and many other stimulants are knock-offs of the active ingredients found in ma huang AKA ephedra. Ma huang is a safe and effective stimulant that increases mental focus.
Cholesterol-lowering drugs known as statins are knock-offs of the natural ingredient found in red yeast rice. Akin to the drugs, red yeast rice can dangerously lower cholesterol levels.
Aspirin, the drug that your doctor tells you to take EVERYDAY, is a knock-off of the active ingredient found in white willow bark. White willow bark is a safe and effective pain reliever.
Baicalein, an anti-cancer drug used among those who suffer from leukemia, is a knock-off of the active ingredient found in the roots of Chinese skullcap (Scuterllaria baicalensis). Chinese skullcap is a safe and effective natural cancer fighter that induces cell suicide (apoptosis) among leukemia-derived cancer cells. The tiny family of prescription pain killers used by doctors are knock offs of the natural ingredients found in opium (opium is far safer than current fast acting drug knock-offs).

Arthritis is Boring
(image courtesy: novapublishers & book depository)
When folks come to me, I know they want to use the language they are used to. So, I hear it. The dreaded A word.
Arthritis.
Arthritis is one of those labels that are misused, much like cholesterol. We can measure cholesterol with a blood test and think we can use it for diagnostic, disease prediction purposes. Which time has told us is another assumption gone bad, (yet is still a great way for pharma to profit).
We use X-rays to diagnose arthritis. Well, most of us in medicine and chiropractic do. Now, I realize, if you don't have a broken bone, don't overthink it. Typically when someone hears a doctor say arthritis, a wave of panic ensues. But we know an X ray or MRI does not correlate with pain or future pain.
It reminds me of an interview I heard with Dr. Terry Wahls of the Wahls protocol. She bounced back from a severe malfunction that left her in a horizontal wheel chair (for a while).
After she regained her mobility and returned to work, she stated her brain scans looked exactly the same. It had the same "plaquing" on her brain that endowed her with the label of multiple sclerosis. It is her belief that different parts of her brain took over as she nourished her body with whole foods. She has quite an interesting story that should help the public change their ideas of how the body works. Save yourself from the dread and fear when people throw these labels back and forth. (Images courtesy: terrywahls.com)
A tight joint and a birthday milestone over age 50 gives you the wonderful title of arthritis.
You know I don't buy it. When I used to run 5K races, 80 and 90 year olds used to blow me away. How can that be?
But in the last few years, people don't just have arthritis anymore. They have lupus, Lymes, fibromyalgia, and rheumatoid.
People wear these titles as a badge of honor. They'll take offense if you don't remember their special diagnosis. People might be offended when they read my comments here, but I don't like the direction the medical system is going in. We are amazed by these strange afflictions and don't seem to have protocols to reverse them. Or do we?
I had to learn a grocery list of arthritis types. Apparently there are over 100 types, but my school had to narrow it down to about 20. I'd still be in school today trying to memorize their similarities and differences. And how does that help people get healthier? It doesn't.
Let's actually live in the real world. We can remove the embellishments of labels, findings, symptoms, and just give the body what it is lacking.
This lacking comes from an energy drain that is not properly replenished at reasonable intervals. This is how I describe the stages of the nervous system so we can learn how to partner with our brain and body.
Everything the brain does is appropriate for the situation. It prioritizes its needs based on the level of stress it encounters, (real and perceived through brain memory). Body responses don't happen to you. A disease doesn't happen. It is intelligently chosen by your brain.
When we are in the fight or flight-sympathetic state, we burn through our reserves. When we are in the vagus-parasympathetic state it is our opportunity to rest, digest, rebuild. Too much stress puts the rebuilding part on hold. When that stage is suspended, we lose minerals, bone density, muscle strength, organ efficiency.
Chiropractic helps you get back to an appropriate balance between these 2 states. I call chiropractic a way to renovate patterns that are more draining rather than sustaining.
When you are ready to do a pattern renovation of the brain/nervous system/body, let's get started.
** I had a copy of that Spine Dictionary in my office. I just tossed it in the trash can about a month ago. I thought it would be cool to keep it on my shelf in the office for reference or teaching purposes. I probably looked at it once when I first bought it. It didn't serve me. ***

An eye opening book.
"It is a must-read for anyone who wants the truth delivered with impeccable facts and enveloping prose."
"Every person in America who values their life and their health needs to read this book."
Fight for Your Health is a stunning exposé into the secret world of the FDA, Wall Street, and drug companies. At stake is the health and well-being of all Americans. Adverse reactions, even deaths, are hidden while dangerous drugs are pushed on Americans, especially children—simply for profit. The FDA is actively attacking health freedom and seeking to eliminate natural health options. Arm yourself with invaluable information that will help you take charge of your health:
FDA working on behalf of drug companies
Mind-control through “mental health”
The true Codex story; health option control
Globalization at the expense of Americans
Poisoning us with our food and water
Your DNA in government computers
Fight for Your Health documents the scope and severity of prescription-drug fraud in America. It explains, for the first time, how Americans are prescribed billions of dollars' worth of drugs that have serious health consequences. It exposes the inappropriate and detrimental uses of bone drugs, brain drugs, and cholesterol-lowering medication.
Using drugs for prevention and to regulate behavior in children is a medical disaster, undermining the health of our nation. Medical doctors, under the influence of pervasive pharmaceutical marketing, rely on drug-based care for disease prevention and the treatment of people with dubious behavioral diagnoses. Our children are especially at risk: They are being exposed to a national clinical drug trial--an experiment with their brains that will have lifelong consequences.
The FDA has put into mothballs its federal mandate to protect the public. In order to foster drug sales, the FDA hides important medical data from the public and from doctors, including the risks of heart attacks, suicide, seizures, and serious mental-health debility. Even worse, the FDA has changed sides. They are actively undermining the rights of citizens to claim damages if injured by drugs. And they are seeking to remove safety barriers to drug testing. They are planning to expose many individuals to unproven drugs, a new form of human experiment.
President Bush has filled the top positions at the FDA with major promoters of drug sales. The priority of these men is to rush unproven drugs to market, for the financial benefit of Wall Street and Big Pharm.
The FDA is now actively involved in the drug-design business, using sophisticated software to assist pharmaceutical companies in drug development.
The FDA is utterly incompetent to monitor the safety of existing drugs on the market. They ignore the numerous adverse side effects that are reported from toxic drugs used for prevention. They are not able to inform the consumer public of the true risks or possible problems associated with almost any medication.
An example, detailed in Fight for Your Health, is the wide-spread use of statins for lowering cholesterol. These medications are portrayed to the public as safe and effective, when in fact they are among the most dangerous and health-deteriorating drugs that exist. Virtually all adverse side effects of statins, except severe muscle damage and death, are ignored by the FDA. Instead, the FDA promotes seriously toxic use of these these drugs—even for prevention.
At the same time that the FDA is fostering drug development and drug sales, they are actively working to suppress natural-health options which hold tremendous health-care potential, especially for prevention of serious problems. In fact, the FDA assists international efforts to ban the use of helpful nutritional options in America. They continue this effort, even though the majority of Americans fully support natural-health options. The FDA has become an aberrant police force, working against health, rather than protecting us.

It's Time to Take a Smart Multi
Phyto-Multi: Advanced Multi for Cell protection, DNA stability, verified by ORAC testing against 5 free radical types, not just one *Gluten free
Available at Homic Advanced Chiropractic
$34.94 / one month supply, WOW! :) (Compare to other genetic supplements that are up to $100)
The introduction of PhytoMulti supports Metagenics’ upcoming launch of its 2012 "Year of You” in-office program for health practitioners to offer patients —providing simple, healthy resolutions, and nutritional protocols for the new year to improve health.*
PhytoMulti is positioned as the “Smart Multi” because it’s designed to uniquely target cellular health to nourish cells, recharge cellular communication, and defend against free radical damage. PhytoMulti was created using extensive research to develop a strategic combination of phytonutrients — bioactive secondary metabolites in plant-based foods — known for their antioxidant properties and positive influence on cell signaling to communicate healthy messages throughout the body.
This proprietary blend of 13 concentrated plant extracts and phytonutrients has been scientifically tested for potential biological activity to protect cells via antioxidant capacity and maintenance of DNA stability.*
“PhytoMulti not only targets cell protection, but advanced laboratory tests have shown its potential for superior biological activity to deliver support that may ultimately influence health in a number of ways,” said Joseph Lamb, MD, director of intramural clinical research for Metagenics. "PhytoMulti is the only professional brand daily supplement that provides this sophisticated level of scientific evidence."*
An independent laboratory evaluated PhytoMulti’s proprietary blend and the entire combination of active ingredients with the new total functional oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORACFN) assay that measures against five major free radicals.
Unlike a conventional ORAC, which tests against only one radical, this expanded in vitro assay provides a better sense of antioxidant protection against a variety of potentially damaging free radicals and other reactive oxygen species. An analysis of PhytoMulti's active ingredients (equivalent to the contents in one tablet) showed a total ORACFN value of 12,600 trolox, demonstrating exceptional antioxidant capacity.*
The potential of the phytonutrient blend to help maintain DNA stability was validated using the COMET assay, a complex in vitro test using human immune cells. This assay demonstrated a 52 percent increase in DNA stability when cells pretreated with the phytonutrient blend were compared to control cells introduced to the same oxidative medium (peroxides).*
“PhytoMulti is a one-of-a-kind supplement that begins with a novel phytonutrient base and is enhanced with essential vitamins and minerals to provide multidimensional health support like no other foundation nutrition formula,” continued Lamb.
PhytoMulti contains a combination of plant extracts with complex phytonutrients and additional phytonutrients that were selected for their targeted support for cellular health and function, as well as for their positive influence in multiple pathways and health systems.
Metagenics performs a rigorous ingredient selection process that includes high performance thin layer chromatography (hpTLC) to confirm plant species and phytonutrient profiles, and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to verify the presence of key plant bioactives. This seed-to-shelf diligence assures plant authenticity and a full spectrum of phytonutrients designed for multi-faceted support — beginning with cell protection.*
In addition to the phytonutrient blend, PhytoMulti also delivers a concentrated daily dose of:
- Clinically effective levels of select plant bioactives — resveratrol, lutein, zeaxanthin and lycopene — to help support health of the eyes, liver, heart, and more*
- An optimized blend of essential minerals and vitamins, including vitamin forms designed for greater bioavailability: vitamin D3, L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate (folate) and methylcobalamin (B12)
PhytoMulti will be available Jan. 1, 2012, through health practitioners nationwide. PhytoMulti with Iron, formulated for those who may [need/benefit from] supplemental iron, will be available Feb. 1, 2012.*

Corn Syrup Part 2: Are You Sure It's Bad?
Fructose is No Answer For a Sweetener
By Nancy Appleton, Ph.D.
The consumption of fructose (corn syrup) has risen considerably in the general population within recent years. In 1980 the average person ate 39 pounds of fructose and 84 pounds of sucrose. In 1994 the average person ate 66 pounds of sucrose and 83 pounds of fructose. This 149 pounds is approximately 19% of the average person's diet.
This increase is due to several factors. There was a decreased use of cane and beet sugar (sucrose) in processed foods and a wide spread use of corn syrup due to economics. Corn is much cheaper and twice as sweet as table sugar. It is absorbed only 40% as quickly as glucose and causes only a modest rise in blood sugar.
A few years ago the medical community revealed that there was good news for diabetics. Many people had previously known that table sugar (sucrose) was not a healthy food for diabetics because it raised their blood sugar levels above normal.
Since diabetics have a hard time maintaining healthy blood sugar levels, doctors counseled diabetics not to eat sugar. The new revelation was that diabetics could eat fructose because fructose did not raise their blood sugar level extremely high. So far so good, but there is more.
Many doctors were recommending fructose instead of glucose. Today fructose is not only being used by some diabetics but it is used for a variety of foods, drinks and confectionery around the world. It is used for candies for diabetics, desserts for weight watchers, drinks for the sportsman and jelly for the health conscious.
The medical community recommended it because of a low increase in glucose in the blood. The scientists did not look at other factors in the body when a person eats sugar. Let's look at some of these factors now.
Fructose has no enzymes, vitamins, and minerals and robs the body of its micronutrient treasures in order to assimilate itself for physiological use.
Fructose browns food more readily (Maillard reaction) than with glucose. This may seem like a good idea, but it is not.
The Maillard reaction, a browning reaction, happens with any sugar. With fructose it happens seven times faster with than glucose, results in a decrease in protein quality and a toxicity of protein in the body.
This is due to the loss of amino acid residues and decreased protein digestibility. Maillard products can inhibit the uptake and metabolism of free amino acids and other nutrients such as zinc and some advanced Maillard products have mutagenic and/or carcinogenic properties. The Maillard reactions between proteins and fructose, glucose, and other sugars may play a role in aging and in some clinical complications of diabetes.
Research showed that in subjects that had healthy glucose tolerance and those that had unhealthy glucose tolerance, fructose caused a general increase in both the total serum cholesterol and in the low density lipoproteins (LDL) in most of the subjects. This puts a person at risk for heart disease.
Another study showed that the very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) increased without an apparent change in high density lipoproteins (HDL). The VLDL and the LDL should be as low as possible and the HDL should be as high as possible.
There is a significant increase in the concentration of uric acid that is dependent on the amount of fructose digested. After glucose no significant change occurs. An increase in uric acid can be an indicator of heart disease.
Fructose ingestion in humans results in increases in blood lactic acid, especially in patients with preexisting acidotic conditions such as diabetes, postoperative stress, or uremia. The significance to human health is that extreme elevations cause metabolic acidosis and can result in death.
Fructose is absorbed primarily in the jejunum and metabolized in the liver. Fructose is converted to fatty acids by the liver at a greater rate than is glucose. When consumed in excess of dietary glucose, the liver cannot convert all of the excess of fructose in the system and it may be malabsorbed. What escapes conversion and being absorbed into the cells may be thrown out in the urine. Diarrhea can be a consequence.
Fructose interacts with oral contraceptives and elevates insulin levels in women on "the pill."
Fructose reduced the affinity of insulin for its receptor. This is the first step for glucose to enter a cell and be metabolized. As a result, the body needs to pump out more insulin, to handle the same amount of glucose.
Fructose consistently produced higher kidney calcium concentrations than did glucose in a study with rats. Fructose generally induced greater urinary concentrations of phosphorus and magnesium and lowered urinary pH compared with glucose.
The balance of minerals in the body is very important for the function of vitamins, enzymes and other body function. When the minerals are out of the right relationship, the body chemistry suffers. The presence of diarrhea might be the cause of decreased absorption of minerals.
Fructose-fed subjects lose minerals. They had higher fecal excretions of iron and magnesium than did subjects fed sucrose. Apparent iron, magnesium, calcium, and zinc balances tended to be more negative during the fructose feeding period as compared to balances during the sucrose feeding period.
A study of 25 patients with functional bowel disease showed that pronounced gastrointestinal distress may be provoked by malabsorption of small amounts of fructose.
Many times fructose and sorbitol are substituted for glucose in parenteral nutrition (intervenious feeding, IV). This can have severe consequences with people with hereditary fructose intolerance, a congenital disorder affecting one in 21,000. A European doctor declared: "Fructose and sorbitol containing infusion fluids have no further place in our hospital pharmacies."
There is significant evidence that high sucrose diets may alter intracellular metabolism, which in turn facilitates accelerated aging through oxidative damage. Scientists found that the rats given fructose had more undesirable cross?linking changes in the collagen of their skin than in the other groups.
These changes are also thought to be markers for aging. The scientists say that it is the fructose molecule in the sucrose, not the glucose, which plays the larger problem.
Fructose is not metabolized the same as other sugars. Instead of being converted to glucose which the body uses, it is removed by the liver.
Because it is metabolized by the liver, fructose does not cause the pancreas to release insulin the way it normally does. Fructose converts to fat more than any other sugar. This may be one of the reasons Americans continue to get fatter.
Fructose raises serum triglycerides significantly. As a left-handed sugar, fructose digestion is very low. For complete internal conversion of fructose into glucose and acetates, it must rob ATP energy stores from the liver.
Fructose inhibits copper metabolism. A deficiency in copper leads to bone fragility, anemia, defects of the connective tissue, arteries, and bone, infertility, heart arrhythmias, high cholesterol levels, heart attacks, and an inability to control blood sugar levels.
It seems that the magnitude of the deleterious effects varies depending on such factors as age, sex, baseline glucose, insulin, and triglyceride concentrations, the presence of insulin resistance, and the amount of dietary fructose consumed.
Some people are more sensitive to fructose. They include hypertensive, hyperinsulinemic, hypertriglyceridemic, non?insulin dependent diabetic people, people with functional bowel disease and postmenopausal women.
There is a continuing increase in sugar consumption in the United States. We now eat 153 pounds of sugar per person per year.
This increase is mostly in the form of fructose. From the research presented, it seems that this increase is going to have a negative influence on our health.
